I woke up staring up at an alien sky, of flowing red and dark. It took a few seconds for the wrongness of this to set in, but when I was able to look around at the rest of my surroundings there was nothing to take comfort in.

I found myself lying on a small cliff jutting out of a mountain, part of a large range. I had never been in such a place before, though I had heard tales from adventurers who dropped by for the Priest's aid - while waiting for the divine spells to be prepared, some of them were happy to pass the time bragging of their noble expliots to me, the Priest's Aide.

There was no way I could have come here on my own power. What happened? Had some vile Magus made an example of me by banishing me to the far reaches of the Realms? The rock that made up the mountains looked like it could exist on my own world, but that sky couldn't possibly. But trying to remember how I'd lost conciousness the previous evening was turning up nothing but fog.

I was Alyn, acolyte of a small-town church nestled in inhospitable wilderness. I had been gifted a small trickle of divine magic from the diety I served, but not enough to be a true Cleric. No adventuring group would want a mere Divine Adept unless it was a choice between them and a common worker. We could merely support those who did the work of keeping the world from falling to pieces from our holdouts as best we could...

My world was full of danger. And this one was unlikely to be different. Maybe if I were part of an adventuring party, I'd have a chance of surviving long enough to reach a settlement of some kind. But not only was I alone, but I'd been dropped off on a clif without so much as the clothes I'd been wearing yesterday.

...It was cold this high up. Was that part of what had woken me up?

I had to at least try to get moving. Looking around in this eerie un-light, there were paths and trails I could see. I would try to make my way down to a point where I wasn't liable to fall to my death if I rolled over in my sleep.

...And if I was very lucky, I wouldn't run into something that would have a young woman like me for a snack right away.

Sadly, I would not be so lucky, as the trail I selected led me straight to a trio of giant (but still child-sized) rats. At first they were as distracted as I had been by the state of the sky, but one caught a glimpse of me out of the corner of its unblinking eye, and drew the others' attention to me.

I'd been moving slowly to avoid falling, but these rats were better suited to these mountains. While I was getting ready to run, the first rat caught up with me and went to bite. ...But then, at the last second, it decided to try grabbing onto me instead of trying to break the skin. I quickly wriggled free and began moving away back along the trail while it was off balance.

Then the next one caught up and tries the same thing. Again I'm able to pry it loose, and again I notice how strange its behaving. The third crowds me and gnashes it's teeth at me, but I evade its lunge.

At this point the first one has managed to catch up again, more sure of itself now. But I'm likewise on guard and keep it from getting it's jaws around me. There's an opening that I could use to try a spell, but I hadn't known to prepare for this. I have nothing ready to use in a fight.Instead, I try to shove one of the rats off the mountain. While this in theory should be my best chance, the rat takes the opportunity to bite down hard on my arm, my forceful shove and it's sharp teeth combining to leave a nasty gash. I see a red fog creeping over my vision, knowing that I can't take much more of this.

Another rat - I'm losing track of which one of the three - manages to grab onto me again and this time I can't shove it away. Then... the creature opens its mouth wide and engulfs my head. As critical seconds pass, I try to squirm free but my strength is leaving me. The beast's mouth slips down, down around me, shoving my head into its acrid stomach. It feels like 6 seconds have passed when it's teeth grip onto my rear, even though it also feels like it's taking time to enjoy the meal. At 12 seconds, its mouth slips shut over my toes and I'm left curling in it's belly as the rat starts chittering to its fellows.

As the beast goes about its business, possibly conversing with its compatriots about the impossible feat they were all driven to try but it accomplished, I quickly lose conciousness. But even as I know that I'm doomed to a digestive demise, I also know that this was only the start of the nightmare...

But what form could it possibly continue in?

Rats, she couldn't get away! Interesting style, both the gamification and the first person narration.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I'm leaving this fallow for a while. I'm not quite satisfied with the next few chapters.
