The guard explains that the spaceship was built for a larger spacefaring species. Some of which are on board.

Left in the vents will lead into the hallway.

Right will lead into the kitchen.

This answer seems quite sincere. No reason to mistrust the lady: if Bright wants to risk leaving the cell through the vent, he should try turning to the left. Hallways are known to be far more hospitable then kitchens in most scenarios, after all…
