Not sure what this is? Here's a post explaining the series!: https://aryion.com/g4/view/712411
____________
There was pretty unanimous support for taking on the test for the apprenticeship, so we've gone ahead with fighting Sila! And Adrea's first impression is that in her lacking knowledge of elementals she might have underestimated how strong a nymph would be, so we'll see how this goes.

Now that the stage is set for our fight, any input on what our strategy should be? Remember that as established way back in our fight with Veela, earth elementals are particularly vulnerable to frost damage!

You can find Adrea’s character sheet here!: https://aryion.com/g4/view/712418
And Miram now has her own character art on it as well! It was made by  TrashMammal, you can find the full size version here

Remember, you can ask any questions about the world (that are relevant to the current chapter) if you think you want/need more information about something! I'll do a 'live' intelligence check before answering if it's something Adrea might know.

| CLOSED - There's either a more recent entry available to read or I've already outlined the next chapter! |

Alright! Starting with a frost wall to get some cover was a good move. Given their vulnerability to frost damage, I think out strategy should be focusing on keeping protected from her attacks as best we can (like by taking cover behind our wall) while peppering her with frostbolt. We should keep an eye out for openings for us to use spells like Blind or Frost Wall again to keep her stunned or trapped in such a way that we can keep attacking her without her being able to return fire.

We should try blind, but even if it lands don't rely on it. Without normal eyes she may be immune, or she may be able sense us through the ground.
If we discover it works, then we can lean more heavily on keeping her blinded while we attack.
If we determine blind to fail due to some sort of connection with the earth, we can try elevating ourselves above the arena floor with ice walls.
Otherwise if she is just immune, but has no special senses we can use the ice walls to conceal or obfuscate our position. (Hey Os, can the ice wall be seen through at all? and if so, how clearly?)

Once we have a working defense discovered Jazz said the rest, keep the defense up and working while pelting her with aggressive spells

No, the ice wall is made of glacier style ice, you can't see through it at all

Would a frost bolt be able to destroy the boulder enough so it wouldn't be harmful? if not then I say we take cover behind the ice wall and try to play around it. From there we should keep up pressure with frost bolts. Buuut if she's pushing up on us, we should do a quick spray of flame jet to get her away

Breaking the boulder should be possible, but Adrea isn't confident a single frost bolt would be enough to neutralize it

Would we be able to ice wall ourselves up? In the spell description, it says it "raises a thick wall from the ground" so I'm assuming we are able to.

I think we ice wall to block line of sight, and then ice wall ourselves again up after a short amount of time, ideally timing it so that Sila thinks we're on the other side of the wall, but when she checks/round the corner, we're nowhere to be found.

I think we fight with frostbolt mainly, as it's type advantaged.

Yes, ice wall can be cast at the ground under our feet

Big rock floating above Sila's head(who I've mistaken her as a water elemental instead of a earth elemental)? Sounds like a good time to use Ice wall to launch Sila into her own attack. Then we'll use Blind then use Flame Jet to take away her senses and deal some damage. At the same time, we should be preparing to trap Sila, perhaps surround her with Ice Walls? Or can we modify Ice Wall to become a Ice Circle instead? Like are all spells are RAW, or do we have some flexibly when it comes to casting them?

Spells function very rigidly, so no, ice wall will always be a straight line. You can get creative with how you *use* a spell's effects, like the idea you have here of using ice wall right under her to push her up, but the spells themselves will always do exactly what they say they do

Darn. Any chance we could learn any metamagic things that could help us change how spells work, or are spells always the same?

Either way, I'm down to launch Sila into her own attack

OsmiumOrchid

As far as Adrea knows, there's nothing that would let you modify spells like that

Look like our new goal in this CYOA is to find the secrets to do metamagic, even if it ends up with us selling our soul to a demon, devil, angel, god, or anything else. All just to cast Ice Jail

The fact that Nymph have their own personalities and aren't some kind of drone can actually work to our advantage here. Sila is flush with overconfidence here, we can use that. I love the idea of launching her into her own attack, It'd certainly serve to fluster and embarrass her. If it works, Adrea can also dispell the icewall immediately to drop Sila to to the ground, under her own rock, right after. Outside of that, try to pepper her with icebolt.
It seems to me that Sila is going to be aware of her ice weakness and we'll have to play around that fact that she's expecting it.
Maybe Adrea can lure Sila into a false sense of security by purposefully wiffing some firebolts? Fool her into thinking that Adrea doesn't know about the ice weakness and is also a less proficient mage than she really is. Then when trying for something at a critical moment, Sila won't be expecting it.

Can we dodge and get to a point where we can see Sila? If so, I think we should attempt to dodge the rock and then cast searing wave whenever we are in a safe position. If Sila loses her footing like I hope they will, then we can cast flame jet. Hopefully that will either make Sila lose her footing, break Sila's elemental binding, or both. If we cannot reach Sila, could we use flame jet to make a window in the ice then cast searing wave after?

Seeing Sila isn't an issue, other than the wall we just raised and are already peeking around the edge of the arena is totally open! To your second question though, using flame jet on the wall wouldn't accomplish much unfortunately, it would likely end up destroying the integrity of the wall entirely before boring a usable window through it ^^;
