Not sure what this is? Here's a post explaining the series!: https://aryion.com/g4/view/712411
____________
Most people seemed fine with risking the shorter route, some even hoping it would mean an opportunity for another meal or a chance at some extra coin, so that's the way we went! And probably to no one's surprise, we ran into bandits on the road that we were warned had bandits on it. Adrea was perceptive enough to notice them coming and prevent being completely blindsided, but that wasn't enough to stop us from landing in a dicey situation.
So, how should we handle this? Try to convince(and or intimidate) them into backing down first since a fight hasn't quite broken out yet? Strike first and try to take them on? Just cough up the money? Or maybe there's some possibility to flee and get away from them?
For reference, here's what the current situation looks like:
Adrea and Lenora are standing at attention in the back of the cart ready to strike if need be, while Miram is hiding. Joan is still at the front of the carriage and Adrea isn't sure if she's armed at all or able to fight. We're surrounded: There's a summoned ice wall blocking the front of the carriage, a tough looking hobgoblin with a battleaxe to the right, Madeline on horseback behind us, and two bandits to the left, a halfing with a bow and a human with a sword. They're all lightly armored, and Madeline is clearly the best equipped with a proper iron chestplate.
You can find Adrea’s character sheet here!: https://aryion.com/g4/view/712418
Remember, you can ask any questions about the world (that are relevant to the current chapter) if you think you want/need more information about something! I'll do a 'live' intelligence check before answering if it's something Adrea might know.

I'm down for striking first. I do wonder if we can do the ice wall trick that we did with the spirit back in the mage guild. Want to hit mutiple people, but might just settle for the archer, given that if Joan is shot, no one is able to drive us to our destination. We don't have the gold needed to pay their toll, our only fancy jewelry is the bracers that we're wearing, and we're not about to let our goblin friend become a snack for a random bandit. So fight we must.

I agree that paying their "toll" either in the form of gold, valuables or Miriam isn't an option and it's clear we're not talking our way out of this based on how things are going to far, so we've got a fight on our hands here whether we like it or not. The fact we're already outnumbered AND there may be another mage hidden somewhere makes me a bit nervous here. We should expect this to be a hard fight and behave accordingly. We'll need Miriam and ideally Joan (if she can fight at all) with us here to help even the odds.
I'd be in favor of striking first here. Does Searing Wave have any kind of knockback component? If we could
quickly chug the Ichor of Rava and use Searing wave to push at least two of the bandits ideally including the archer back into the bushes while lighting it/them on fire it'd help keep them busy while we deal with the others. Given they don't have an ice vulnerability like the spirit and we're more skilled with fire magic, I think it makes more sense to lean on that. Obviously we should keep an eye out for opportunities to use the ice wall if it comes up, but I think that Ichor of Rava and aggressive use of our AOE fire magic like Blind, Flame Jet and Searing Wave should be used to burn down as much of the group as we can early in the fight to even things out.

Searing Wave doesn't directly cause any significant knockback, though people faced with a wave of fire will tend to try and reposition themselves to avoid it

Our only option here is to fight. Striking without warning gives us the best chance. Try to negotiate at first, but as soon as they start to put their guard down ATTACK. Call it playing dirty, but we're outnumbered as far as able-fighters go and need every advantage we can get.
First step: We wordlessly indicate to Lenora that we're going to fight. Communicating with companions is key and it seemed to work with Kip. Next: for our first attack, I think it'd be clever to cast Enrage on 'Madeline's Horse' and spook it. I doubt the horse is going to attack *us*, worst case scenario Madeline gets off the horse before it does anything, best case scenario it bucks her off and maybe tramples one of her allies. During the initial panic caused by this, blind the halfling archer and let Lenora pin down the hobgoblin with her range. Use Searing wave on the human and the halfling and be prepared for Madeline to rejoin the fight.
Our goal here should be to get into a position where we can flee from the battle as unscathed as possible, if the opportunity presents itself to run, I say take it. Unless these bandits are real pushovers, in which case maybe it'd serve us to fight to the finish.

I think it would be smart to try and intimidate them into letting you pass based on Lenora's prowess and affiliations. They can always pick on weaker travelers without risking third degree burns after all. If they refuse, then it would be smart to feign an attempt to comply and then cast searing wave on the most grouped-up enemies. Either way, subtly telling the party would be for the best.
If Madeline moves up near the hobgoblin when she comes for the coinpurse, then that would be the better group to target. If she's smart enough to stay back, then it might be best to cage the archer and their ally in an ice wall while the party handles their friends. Casting blind on the archer could work too.
