Sketches by the definiton are works that are 'unfinished' That varies from artist to artist. If you compare this picture to my 'finished' pictures you'll see how much more simple/quicker those are to make overall, but that's not to say I couldn't do something even 'sketchier', but it'd just not look good.
But the best example would probably be that I could sketch a character in 5 minutes, and color/shade it in like 2 minutes max and it'd be the same sketch, but colored.

They're very basic shadows to communicate depth. A properly shaded drawing would have much more complex shadows of varying opacity.
