Amber goes out to the lake. So do two unexpected guests. A fighter's spirit is tested by the power of love. The end of something proves the beginning of something else.

Third chapter in the series "An Octopus's Gauntlet". It also features the protagonist of "A Vermin Problem", which you can read by clicking here although that's not mandatory to understand this chapter since a recap is provided at the beginning.

Well, that could have ended up a lot worse. It's a surprise that Amber didn't have a public bounty out on her, the way she'd been misbehaving.

Let's just say... Irahel isn't the only adventurer who made a powerful friend at the onset of her journey, though they were only mentioned in passing.

Is the name Tana supposed to mean anything to the audience?

Perceptive. It's the first time the name Tana pops up in any of my stories, but it won't be the last.

After some reflection, it's interesting that you made that comparison. Irahel didn't really make a friendship at the start of her journey. She made a temporary arrangement for a ride, and the being she made that with had another job to get back to afterwards.

They were likely to never see each other again after they split back up, and this fact seems to underlie Tonalnan's behavior towards her. Why not abuse the trust of, or put effort into not burning bridges with someone, when she'll never see Irahel again after she's had her fun? Deliverance let me with no doubt that Tonalnan was just going to fly off back to her post after dropping Irahel walking distance from home, and barely think of the poor abused girl afterwards.

Yes and no; Irahel still has two feathers Tonalnan gifted to her and Tiznessu, which she can use to summon the couatl anytime.

Ah, that is true. I'd forgotten about that.
