Dragonfall is an alternate Earth that was quite close to reality until December 21st, 2012, when in a brilliant, blinding flash of light seen around the world, indoors and outdoors, 95% of the men in the world vanished and an enormous, dying dragon fell from the sky near Las Vegas, Nevada.

Many other changes occurred as well, some immediate, some not. Magic was now a part of the world, And most advanced technology - including firearms and everything with an engine or electronics - was now unreliable and prone to explosive failure. The remaining men displayed a high resistance to magic, but also an inability to use it. Whereas the food needs of women quadrupled, with all women now capable of swallowing large prey whole and developing a store of liquid magical energy in their stomach called mana. Mana replaced typical digestive juices in women, is expended by doing magic and restored by eating.

Almost eighty years after the divergence, society has reclaimed some semblance of stability. Men are a subjugated lower class, whose primary purpose is breeding and who are typically kept chained to the wall in what's basically a brothel for their own safety to prevent women from eating them. As advanced agriculture is impossible without volatile machinery, and magic to resurrect women is simple, most "real food" is given to men, with women typically living off of each other.
