Imps from the shadow are not too unlike the demonic and other otherworldly imps that others are familiar with; beings warped yet empowered by planar energy, diminutive forms, playful body language... and yet, their history is more complicated. They are neither inherently evil nor chaotic, and they can be natural-born just as often as they can be altered from their original selves. But if, by any chance, you have encountered one...there's a good chance it was one of two specific ones.

This is their story.

I intentionally keep specific elements of the imps unclear: whether or not one (or both) of them are royalty; whether or not they're lovers, friends, siblings, or any combination of those three; if they were banished or left of their own volition; why they left in the first place; and other things like that. While I do know the answers to those questions, it honestly doesn't matter. Lenai and Sarei are meant to be strangers in a strange land. Lenai is bold and shameless; she sees herself as not only equal to anyone else but superior to most. She's confident, self-assured, self-serving, and very difficult to form a true emotional connection with. Sarei, however, is meek and dependent; he doesn't put himself on someone else's level lightly. He's anxious, self-conscious, often selfless, and depends on the social connections he makes.

Their dichotomy is one of seeking, even when together. They're always looking for something just out of reach, only to find what was in front of them all along. In terms of meaning and exploration, they're quite flexible to any world that doesn't stall at their inclusion. But ultimately, the only thing of meaning that comes out of their interactions is this: Lenai is the one who wishes to change the lives of those in every world she visits...and Sarei is the one who might actually do that.

I've toyed with redesigning their species a bit. But they'll always be floaty shortstacks with smooth skin and little fangs, so...until there's a truly visionary interpretation, I'm happy with them as they are. x3
