They probably had something in the tutorial... but it's been a long time since I started playing, so I cannot remember. To me, they are just where you go to lighten the "load", so that you can then keep filling up your tank xD

On certain lvls that is very important for mobility, as some doorways require your sack to be a certain size to pass through, but I did find out that you can clear the fourth map by stuffing every person inside your balls. If you have yet to try it, I would challenge you to give it a shot! :)
