I would probably do more same sex stories if the pronouns weren't so awkward in them. If the main characters are different genders then I can use he and she without causing confusion. In stories like this one I keep having to refer to the characters by name which sounds repetitive after a while and messes with the flow of the sentences.

Just wondering if anyone else finds this a problem and whether there are any solutions.

On a slightly more related-to-the-story note, there's a follow up picture of these two Here.

I actually just had to solve this conundrum for a lesbian story...

"Nancy! You know I don't like that"

as opposed to.

"You know I don't like that" she said

As long as the characters address each other you know which one is talking. At least in a group of two. In threes it gets muddled.

For variance, use species as well. Slows down how often you need to use names.

"Wow!" Said the stoat.

Enya grinned. "Yep."

That certainly makes things easier, although runs into problems when there are multiple creatures of the same species. Still, it does make furry stories easier.

Another option is things like height, ethnicity. As long as you introduce it earlier.

"Yep." Said Andrew.

"Definitely." Said Paul.

The American laughed. "Amazing."

That helps, but it can sound a bit unnatural if there is a lot of dialog. In real life, people rarely say the name of the person they're talking to.

Use features that define each character. For example:
The dark blue Lupis Draconi licked his lips slowly as he forced the head of his meal into his maw. The dark red soon to be prey squirmed in his predator's paws, shutting his eyes tight as is fate was sealed with the feeling of Xaphelm's lips sealing around Questal's neck.

You know, I just realized that, within your universe, hypnosis is probably so effective because nobody lives long enough to learn how to avoid it.

Normally, it'd be easy to, say, just look away, but anyone hypnotized likely just gets eaten without being able to pass on the knowledge.
