"We're close."
The whispered words, hardly even audible to the elves' sensitive ears, sent a tremor of excitement throughout the trio. They'd been hot on the trail of the fox for nearly four days now, and they were growing CLOSE. Oh, she'd eluded them a few times, covering her trail, setting up little traps for them...
...Traps that inevitably sought not to hurt them, but to taunt them, it seemed. Branches that whipped their bare legs, cleverly formed from fiber made of the surrounding foliage. Triggers that sent a multitude of brightly-colored berries flying, inevitably marring their otherwise peachy skin with vibrant and altogether silly colors.
She was taunting them, that much was clear. That, in turn, only further embroiled their desire to CATCH her, and when one of the Qual'Lumi elves desired to catch something...it was inevitably caught. It was not the first time Malura Dal'Vos, Piam Gatyol and Felini Zunye had tracked a so-called 'dangerous beast', and it would not be the last. The Qual'Lumi hunters were famed for their ability to travel lightly and quickly, oft-times forsaking armor and large weapons for simply a bow, generally a blade of some sort, and at times spears and the like - not typical elvish weapons, save for the bow, but incredibly effective nonetheless.
This particular fox would soon find they were not to be trifled with as well, no matter how very clever she thought herself to be. Admittedly, the reports that surrounded her methods were....a little disturbing. Elves disappearing was almost unheard of, and yet in the previous two weeks, no less than six had gone missing. Had it not been for a lookout spotting the flitting tail of the silver-haired foxgirl just slipping into the trees after her one of her last meals, they might never have known exactly who - or what - was taking their own right out from under their noses.
That very same lookout went missing just the next night. It was an insult, like she KNEW who'd seen her, or even wanted to be seen...
It was the last straw. Malura, Piam, and Felini had picked up the trail afterwards with relative ease. Perhaps the weight of their digesting comrade slowed her down or made her a little less careful, but either way, she was no longer the ghost she had been. There was a clear trail to follow, and though she hid it from them from time to time, a little extensive effort was all that was required to pick it back up. Now, they had to be getting close. The signs were fresh, the slight disruption of the foliage less than an hour old, not even enough time to let the snapped stems dry.
They were close.
"I know it's not right..." Malura cast a sidelong glance at the speaker, Piam. She had her traditionally braided hair instead loosely pulled back in a ponytail that lightly caressed the top of her back, the silver locks - colored to match the fur of their quarry - a start contrast to her soft, peachy-colored skin. The singsong elvish continued even as Piam readjusted her grip on her bow, fingers flexing against the loosely knocked arrow held between them "....But i'm cutting off that foxgirl's tail and making a nice sash out of it. Or a hat. I'd look good in a fox-fur cap, wouldn't I?"
A lighthearted giggle emanated from Felini's lips, mirrored shortly by a gentle chuckle from Malura herself. Leave it up to Piam to make a hunt something lighthearted and almost silly.
"Just remember. We catch her, confirm, THEN kill. Would hate to have you wearing a fancy hat made out of someone who's NOT our quarry. Though I have a feeling in my gut - this is the one." There was really no doubt in Malura's mind. This was the fox that'd eaten who knows how many of their kinsmen across the land, beyond the number they knew had disappeared from their own settlement. They'd found....'evidence' of the lookout's fate that made it quite obvious after all. No doubt more taunting on the fox's part.
It was infuriating, but soon enough, that smug little smirk would be wiped off her face.
This fox was going to die.

*Crackle!*
The gentle stirring in the underbrush brought a faint smile to Ryla's lips. About time they caught up. Whilst she often preferred to strike from ambush, leading the elves on a figurative 'wild fox chase' had simply been far too much fun to pass up, and observing the 'skilled hunters' stumbling into her playful little traps time and time again had - many times - nearly made her give up her position simply due to having a good laugh. By all rights, they should have been horribly wounded already - she could have given her little 'toys' a deadly spin at any time, but that had not been her goal. Leading them far enough away from their home that she could pick them all off without fear of backup - THAT was her plan.
It had worked brilliantly.
She could smell them. The faint scent of berry mingled so nicely with the undeniably delicious scent of elf so well it made her mouth water in anticipation. She just had to play this out right.
Pausing mid-step, Ryla perked her ears upwards as if curious, swiveling them to and fro atop her head to further zero in on the elves' location despite already having a rather good guess of where they were approaching from. Sure enough - directly behind her, another soft rustle, followed by the gentle creak of a bowstring being drawn taut, an arrow no doubt already knocked and pointed right at her. It was a moment of EXCITEMENT, a moment where her life stood on the very edge, and only what she knew about them would safe her life - they'd check first. Make sure...
If not..? Well, she hoped the elf was a bad shot.
Putting her hands up in an 'I surrender' gesture, Ryla slowly turned to face the trio of elves who stood at the ready to face her.
"Found you." The elf situated a little more toward the middle of the group said, the edge of her long ,thin blade held at the ready. Another elf had a bow, and the last had a smaller hunting dagger - no doubt a weapon that could be thrown with deadly accuracy if given the chance. Hrm...a bow. She really didn't care to mess with that ,but...the two blades were not as large of a concern. Of course, she was a little outnumbered....
...Though there were ways to make those numbers count for far, far less.
"So you did..." Ryla responded in clear elvish, drawing a surprised look from the trio, and even earning a slight lowering of the bow from the elf on her left, though that reprieve was brief, and soon enough the metallic tip was once more lifted and leveled squarely at her chest, the elf no doubt getting a steady bead on her heart. It would be a killing shot, and even if it missed, it'd pierce a lung and still take her out of commission quickly...and limit her ability to flee.
Hrrm. They knew what they were doing, she'd give them that.
"Sorry about the berries. I thought elves loved them!" It was all she could do to keep from laughing at the three unamused looks cast in her direction. Ohh, this was going to be far too much fun.

I love that expression on her face in the third panel. I can just imagine her sarcastically saying, "Oh no, you have caught me. Whatever shall I do now?"

I was very excited at first when I thought the elves were male. Like a 10/10 on the scale, Now my excitement levels dipped tremendously to a 9.5/10.
Posted by CassyInko 9 years ago Report
Haha. XD There are pretty good odds that some male prey will be showing up in my gallery pretty soon....x3 Can get that meter back to a 10!
Posted by Justsomeone 9 years ago Report
I think if I started seeing male prey in there that meter would go up to 11.

So, Ryla, which side will be the more shrewd hunter? You or the elves? *Chuckles* Never mind, sweetie, that was a rhetorical question anyway. XD

Yes! Smaller chested elves this time! XD
Posted by ROC 9 years ago Report
Are those those elves professionals? XD They look a bit young and small to be hunting such a large fox.
Posted by CassyInko 9 years ago Report
They are! As for age, they are old - likely in the 200-300 area! Their build is mainly 'small elves', about four to four and a half feet tall, and generally smaller dimensions all the way around!
