> Break it down
You nod to the girl. "Well, go ahead then. Thinking about it... I don't really think we're going to be able to take the stealth route anyway. We're probably-"
You stop as something catches your eye above you. There's a few small openings on the upper parts of the passage. You spot movement through one of them, but this time, you're certain it wasn't just some small bats.
"Nev? What is it?" Tahtsu asks you. The shadow in the passage quickly moves away, seemingly realizing that you spotted it.
"I think... I just saw our target. Looks like it does know we're here." You keep an eye out, looking at other passages, but it looks like whatever was there is gone for now.
"Eh? Well, what was it?" She asks you, but you just shake your head. You didn't get a very good look at it, so you're still not sure what you're up against. "Eh... Well, at least we know that it knows we're here. We'll need to stay more alert now."
You nod to her. "Well, if you still want to knock down that wall, go for it." She nods to you before taking the pick to the wall. After a few sturdy strikes, a hole opens up, leading into the next room. "Looks like there's a pretty big hole in the floor here." She looks inside. "Hey, this should be the one connected to that passage over there." She points over at the passage you checked a bit ago. "I guess this is just the other side of that big hole? Guess that means we don't have to make any jumps." Saying that, the elf moves through the hole, with yourself following. You don't want to split up at all.
After looking around a little, you realize that this side of the chasm is a dead end. Just as you're about to mention this to Tahtsu, you hear her call over to you. "Hey, Nev! I found something!" The girl points to a small box hidden away behind some rocks. "Guess someone thought this would be a good hiding spot for this." Saying that, she opens the box. Inside are a few valuable looking accessories. "Sweet! Hey Nev, I think this could probably be worth a good amount. We probably don't even need to mess with that... whatever it is."
"Tahtsu, this is our job. We can't just abandon it." You sigh, shaking your head at the girl. "Let's leave those here for now. We'll grab them on our way out."
"Aw... You're always a killjoy." She pouts a bit, but follows you anyway as you head back through the hole you made. You carefully continue down the passage and back into the room with the chasm, though this time on the other side of it. You do get an idea, and pull out a bunch of scrap materials from your bag. You light them on fire, tossing them around until the cavern is lit up quite well. "There, these should burn for a little while at least. Now we can actually see beyond the torch." You make a mental note to start making these as you progress further in.
Looking around the cavern, you find yet another passage leading further in. You toss some burning scraps inside to light up the new area a bit better, and find it to be another larger cavern area. To the left is some sort of small river flowing through. However, your bigger concern is what you can see inside the room.
"Oh crap... That's... Those are webs, aren't they?" Tahtsu seems a bit nervous, looking inside. "That's not from a normal spider, is it?"
You shake your head. "No, looks like we might be dealing with an Arachne of some sort. I guess a feral." You look over towards the girl, who is obviously concerned. "Well, they usually live alone at least. So we should have the advantage of numbers."
"Urgh... You say that, but no one really knows a lot about those things." She looks back towards the chasm area where you left the box earlier. "C'mon, we can just grab that stuff and get out of here. There's no sense in us getting killed by a spider in here."
Tahtsu has always been more of a cowardly type, though you have to admit that the idea of facing an Arachne doesn't really thrill you. It would be pretty easy to just grab that stuff and leave...

And these two finally pass a check. Now they might not die so quickly. :V

I suggest leaving, if we;re up against a giant spider than having more than two people would be better.

set fire to the webs... That way we have plenty of light... And can't get stuck to the webs later cause they'll be all burned up
Posted by GUEST19216 8 years ago Report
but what if we get stuck in BURNING spider webs? Not to mention I am pretty sure that would piss off the Arachne if we burn her home down
Posted by forgreatjustice18 8 years ago Report
lmao burn all the webz!

This sounds like a lot of NOPE waitin' ta happen. I'd say bail out; even if we have the advantage of numbers, we're in the Arachne's lair. Just not a good idea.
It's a feral, too, so attemptin' ta befriend it might just be too risky.
Head back out with a very healthy amount of paranoia. One looks out ahead, one looks out behind, short length of somethin' linked between ya in a way that you'll know if, when, and where they get yoinked off without gettin' yanked yerself, and fire. Lots of fire. :P
If we do get out, even if we don't get paid, at least we can tell them what we found. Might get a party better equipped fer takin' out an Arachne in its lair. And we don't have ta tell them about the box of goodies, right?

We have expendable characters, I think we should make use of that fact. We have no reason to do something as unsavory as retreating for the sake of keeping them safe.
This fight seems to be quite winnable as is anyway.

Anyone else getting the feeling these 2 aren't going to leave the cave?
For what to do, they were sent here to get rid of whatever was attacking the miners, so let's get rid of whatever was attacking the miners.
Try luring it out into the smaller cavern. We have better lighting in there. If it's a larger sized creature, it'll have a harder time moving around. We should try staying close to the way we came, just in case it overpowers us, we have an escape route.
Light a few more of the materials at the entrance so that if it does try to block our exit, the fire will help prevent it.

Shes got a cute butt... if they survive will we earn their races? or do we have to recruit them..?

We have some options here.
1. Harmstring the female elf and leave her as sacrifice, while we run. Super safe, but no reward. Also kinda ackward.
2. Get some of the valuables and run. A little reward, but also riskier.
3. Retreat. Inform your employer, what is down there and return with reinforcements. Reasonable safe, but likely reduced reward.
4. Kill it with fire. Guaranteed reward for either the elves, or us.
My vote is for option 4. Start burning down the webs. Prepare to fight alone, as the female elf will be knocked out shortly. Spiders always go for the archers first.
Also nom all the elves.

Perhaps the drider was part of the elvin race and cursed to become something more primal, therefore it feels kinship to thoughs of elvin blood and as such has not killed any. Of course it be only a legend... but where is it legends are born from if not accounts of something quite spectacular. Eh comrade?

Well, seems like she's been sensing Tahtsu and Nev by their vibrations and noise.
Nice, cosy home she has there: Bats to nosh on, running water, comfy web hammocks, and twitching mummified miners for entertainment and laughs. Poke 'em and they let out the cutest muffled cries!
Still can't hurt to call out, "We're here to try your fruit smoothies!" on the one inna million chance she's not feral.

It's a giant spider!!1!one!! XD
On a separate note, I'm personally delighted with all the suggestions mentioning fire. Fire fire, higher HIGHER!

A plausible explaination indeed comrade. Who is to say that the missing miners are in fact dead? Who knows, maybe the creature is not feral and has a claim to the mine. Technically if true then they have every right to deal with tresspassers however they see fit.

You mean the nope turned the missing scouts into more nopes? A truly terrifying thought.

Or perhaps used them as hosts for their brood. Depending on how this venture continues we may survive in a rather odd situation. Imagine if this particular cave is the very begining of this worlds new age. When they are strong enough they will overwhelm the oingdom and with the resources are able to conquer the land.

For now we shale see how we fair against this potential foe.
Posted by paltiel 8 years ago Report
Yeah! Just because someone lives underground and cut off from society doesn't automatically make them a monster. There are several folks in the State of California who fall into that group. ^_~

BAIL! I know we're a vorish RPG here, but I like these two! I wanna see em later on! Lets ruuuuuuuuuuuuun!

Twold seem the feelings in the back of my skull are worth something afterall. Now then we have assessed what we are up against. Now to determine the skill and just how many there are. The small holes in the cieling are, well... small... meaning that either it is a small drider whom resides here that has gotten really good at picking people off. Or perhaps... it is but a spawn of a much larger matriarch drider, in which case there could be dozens within the cave and one very large and potentially angry mother. This would explain as to why the miners are being picked off so easily. A hoard of growing monsters is very nutrient dependent. Well then, if this be the case fire may be our only chance in the end. Fighting a legion and a Goliath is ill advised but we do have higher thinking. This creature from what we know feeds on instinct alone. Albiet very ravenous and successful instinct, but predictable instinct.
May steel line thy path

Loudly yell :"Swiggidy Swooty, we are coming for your spiderbooty!"
Posted by davidargall 8 years ago Report
She who fights and runs away lives to fight another day. Yeah, take the loot and retreat for now. prepare a little more for a spider foe for next time.
Note that retreat often exposes the one in the "rear" to a back attack. So be very careful in the retreat. Don't be in any hurry.
Come back with several web burning tools, and of course spider killing stuff. a couple of companions may split the loot, but this thing has taken out everything that has seen it. That doesn't mean it is tough since it may have had only one victim at a time, but it is the way to bet. 1/4 of the loot is a lot larger than 1/2 if you don't survive because of the small party.
Oh yes, research spiders and web makers. What do they know? If not much, all the more reason to retreat.
But we are in no rush here. probe, retreat, look for the best tactics, probe again...

Drider, Arachne, and other 8 limbed insectoid folk are rather great runners. In fact during the nationwide grandeur games a drider had won the 200 meter dash in half the time of other contestants. An astonishing feet. Drider are also fond of dancing with their many feet. Though usually with their generously endowed rumps they often bump into objects that stray too close.

Quite a lively discussion today.
I like these guys, but I mostly like them because they are doing adventurer stuff. I would like them a lot less if they retreated. That and the fact that we wouldn't have to restart the whole game when they die seems like sufficient reason to stay and fight.
I looked it up and it seems spider silk doesn't burn, it just sort of shrivels. We should probably check to make sure this beasts silk isn't any different. If we can burn away the web then we would remove it's advantage.
What seems important to me is making sure we can see into all the corners. If the we turns out to be flame resistant we should throw fire into the far corners of the web to keep it back-lit. If we can see the spider then we have the advantage at range.
A spider usually fights by wrapping it's opponent in silk, immobilizing it. If we force it to fight us on the ground then it will have a hard time using that tactic. If we still have the ability to swing our sword then we should have the advantage in close range combat, especially with crossbow support.
So to reiterate, destroy the web if possible, find it's hiding spots and drive it out into the open. If we can see it we can beat it.

Whatever we do, don't get close to it while it is in it's web.
