We're used to seeing Hialfi so poorly equipped his most common weapon is a bolas (the throwing weapon seen here), which he can make himself thanks to his leatherworking background.

Now, he's a very big fox (as we see from Mr. Size Comparison Guy Archer) but it occurred to me that if some village accumulated all the bandit gear he and the druid drop off (said bandits not *cough* needing the gear any more) a few blacksmiths could cobble together some foxtaur armor from pounded-flat breastplates and so on. The large leather plates are bulette hide, which really needs no reenforcing but gets a few splints of iron on his forelegs. The other brown leather is also bulette hide, but of the thinner, more flexible sort from the beast's underside. Finally, the brigandine armor protecting his torso and flanks is more common cow leather with metal plates on the inside.

Throw in a huge bardiche acquired from some giant and you'd have a pretty formidable addition to any small town's militia, which is presumably why the town would go to all this trouble. Bonus points if some of the enemy run away because they might end up, still alive, inside said foxtaur.

How many bonus points do you get if the enemy runs towards the foxtaur hoping to end up inside?

Not that they will remain alive inside said foxtaur for long, or even remain inside the foxtaur for long. 83

Awe! Such a nice longfox. Love the outfit he got. Looking very nice all geared up from head to toes~

Though probably very intimidating for enemies~!

I think you might need a ballista to take on this guy.

He's a big target, but fast. Hopefully there won't be too many siege weapons on the field.

I like that his tail got an armor too.

There's a spine in that tail and losing it would be bad. I almost always put tail armor on armored furs, though lighter armor would be nice here.

Do you think they make bows for 14 foot tall anthros in your world?

Some giants use bows, but human-sized characters would have no use for them and they'd therefore be very expensive, which is why he doesn't have one.

In D&D terms, gear of giantish make tends to also be of poor quality. Given the apparently decent quality of the bardiche, this may not hold wholly true (particularly considering that Hialfi doesn't seem to be unusually plus-sized in Strega's world).

HOWEVER, an oversized bow would be another story. If it were wooden, the wood would be extremely difficult to acquire. A composite bow may be a good compromise in materials but bow draw strength would likely increase quadratically, as a function of the cross-section, while the arrows would increase in weight cubically. This would lead to lesser range and lower velocities of arrows.

He would be better off equipping himself with a small ballista-like device (such as a springald or oxybeles) refitted for portable use, or even a gastraphetes. Still classifies as "expensive", but could be conceivably be made by and for humans. The latter two are also old Greek weapons, which typically don't show up in Greyhawk-esque settings.

Storm giants use composite longbows, which are presumably well made, and while they are bigger than he is they are still considered Huge, so he could probably use a bow made for a smallish one. Of course he'd never dream of taking one on and no one's going to have a storm giant bow just lying around.

He's shown with a bow in the "Happy Hialfi" pic, but the premise of that is that he earns a favor from the Maker, who has all sorts of resources to draw on. There is also a Giant Towne district of Monstertown so he could probably get one there...if he had the money. Which he never does. They wouldn't be cheap!

The obvious "damaging" missile weapon for him would be javelins, which he could make himself after he scrounged up a few javelin heads. As a result of all this he usually throws bolas, which are excellent for tying up potential meals if not so useful in a real fight. Plus, he makes them himself so they're free.

A ballista or other small siege weapon would work and he could reasonably find one of those in a ruined caravan or the like. Technically he could carry it around and use it but it'd be a heavy thing to schlep around every day. Given the small chance that a giant would have a bow and he'd somehow get it, a ballista or the like seem more likely.

Actually, I didn't realize how good light crossbows are in 3.5. A Large or Huge light crossbow would be excellent for him. What I don't know is how it would interact with him moving, because while the Mounted Archery feat should work for him and allow him to outrun just about anyone while peppering them with arrows, it might not work the same with even a light crossbow. Definitely not with a Heavy, but I'm not sure about Light. And I just realized that crossbows don't get Strength bonuses. For someone with a very high strength like him, bow (or javelin or hand axe or whatever) is the way to go if you can get it.
