Somehow, I'm not sure that Veronica would be reassured by that line of flawless logic.

Is this the fate of any female without a family to arrange a place in a harem for her? Or just the younger ones?

depends on how useful to society they are. Everybody loses some family at some point in their lives.. but if they basically amount to another mouth to feed with no immediate use, then one way or another, their days are numbered. The Orphanage is primarily a Butchery for the younger ones though it is also often used to make parts from captured enemy villagers or monsters brought back from raids. It does have a few boarding rooms for orphans of the illustrious dead - but they're put to labour. The Headmistress for example is a former orphan herself.
If you belong to a harem though, you are unlikely to see the inside of the orphanage, except in the unlikely event of your husband's untimely death.
Harems are a combination of an officially arranged marriage, mistress marriages of political convenience, girls that a man's wife has hand picked out to entertain him, randomly picked girls o satisfy moments of lust, snuff slaves, and of course, rather regularly, the man's true loves. They may also, for very brief periods of time, consist of dinner.
A Man's children will either board with him and his harem, in the mass female boarding houses with their mothers (a second home) or at the school. Sometimes they will be sold off for political alliance, prestige, or just some shells to spend at the tavern.

While this isn't exactly my cup of tea, I do find this comic series interesting. The whole brutal slaughtering part reminds me of the song "Predator" by Carnivore(Peter Steele's band before Type O Negative if you know of them), specifically the latter half of the song.
