I said I was done with tutorial stuff for now, but it seems like I'm not.

So for starters, Lyra now has 5 strength.. which means that she can now expend energy in a fight to quickly swing her sword again for an extra hit. Normally only daggers can do this (although for free and random chance), but now that Lyra has met the requirements for basic skills she can do this with any melee attack. As she experiences more, Lyra will observe and outright learn new skills.. and by using them she'll train her body to improve her performance. The easiest example would be her two hit strike becoming faster and harder to break out of, or simply adding more hits for more of a combo.

Secondly, I decided to introduce a particular mechanic fairly early.. which is that certain races can transform into other races through certain means. There aren't many that can actually do this yet, but I adore TF stuffs and it's honestly better to do it early than to reveal it after it's already too late and people lose their chance for a particular form. The example given on this page is the transformation line of Kobold > > Dragon/other, essentially something fairly weak becoming something significantly stronger. There may be other benefits for staying any particular form as I've spoken with others and are considering it but for now this is the major point I wanted to bring across.

Finally, I guess I sorta just wanted to give people a lot more information.. since that seems to be the cause of a lot of my problems. Although I'm fairly aware that introducing something new is just going to bring more questions. If people would like, I can replace the bit below this with a link to a google doc that'll show the full party and a bit of extra information such as skills & magic which I probably won't leave here as well as level and EXP.

"A simple courier run"
A group of researchers have set themselves up in some ruins of which the full trip there and back would take nearly two days from the town you are in on foot. They seem to be in constant need for supplies, but it seems like none of the locals are too excited to take up this mantle. However, apparently they have something to do with the earring you found clipped to that Ravenous wolf's ear, so it might be worth checking it out. You should meet up with the mechanic who lives in the town to see what this is about.

"The sword's Trial I"
There's a nearby ruin called a dungeon where you can undertake something called a Trial in order to upgrade the Old One's sword in a meaningful way, it's likely to be fairly difficult and seeing as you have no idea what will happen, it is also going to be fairly hard to prepare for this as well. Strangely, you feel as though you won't be able to bring anyone along for this one.

As a reminder, Lyra still has one more point to distribute~ if you'd like, you can reply to this comment so it's easier for me to count.

Charisma could be really good, in everything from talking to people, to bartering, to convincing people to become our party member.

It would really help right now anyways since we're in town and talking a lot it might just keep us out of too much trouble.

D&D has a pretty good system for this very problem. Its called a Difficulty Class, more widely known as DC. The basic concept is that as you roll a d20, and add your modifiers, you have to clear a certain threshold in order to succeed. With natural (rolled on the die without modifiers) 20 meaning success regardless, and natural 1 meaning failure regardless.

Then, DMs can adjust the DC of a task set before players based on how hard they think it would be. Trying to get a discount at a shop? maybe 10 DC. Trying to lewd the random shopkeep? 15, or 20. Trying to convince someone to betray their boss? 25 or 30. 10 is a benchmark for 'average difficulty' and going above 20 means that players have to be skilled in what they're doing to even have a chance.

This could easily be used by your system, with the specific stat meaning the straight up bonus. 5 in charisma? it would be rare for you to mess up pedestrian things like getting a small discount. 20 in charisma, only a natural 1 would leave people thinking your offer was bad, and you could reach DCs up to 40 (though as nat 20s are success, it would really be up to 39) and do all sorts of crazy stuff like convince random npcs their fate in life is to fill your stomach.

Finally, the in D&D, charisma is a famously sticky stat that has a lot of context in creating the DC. Trying to talk your way past a guard could be a low DC of 5 if you mention you saved his brother from being eaten by a wolf. Or end up being 25 if you stroll up, insult his mother, and demand to see his supervisor so you can get him fired.

I don't use rolls currently, and I'm purposefully avoiding systems like this.

I mostly made a comment while fairly stressed out and was attempting to vent.

JScofi

Posted by JScofi 6 years ago Report

whether you roll or not, stats being a bonus against DC still is a sound idea.

AwokenedWispKP

Well, it's partly due to the fact that I can only do one of these up per week right now.. unless I started posting pages without pictures.

But yeah, unfortunately I'm fairly impatient when it comes to writing as my mind likes to think through things.. and then I start wanting to work on stuff much later in plots and stuff.

Not much we can do about it anyway.

JScofi

Posted by JScofi 6 years ago Report

see above post.

jjlava

Posted by jjlava 6 years ago Report

You just stated the solution right there, start writing without images.

I can't imagine many people would dislike more content and story even if it does lack a large part of the draw of this story, (as long as we don't miss out on anything amazing, vore, or anything super cute, like the kobolds for example.) Or you could possibly just do super quick sketches but I'm not sure if you have the time for that.

Reading and finding out more about the lore and world as well as interacting with the characters is pretty fun all on it's own even without pictures. It all depends on what you want to do.

AwokenedWispKP

Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report

It's not really about having time, it's restrictions from my living situation. It's troublesome to draw when you can't actually sit yourself up without someone yelling at you. :v

But having a picture per page at least lets me have a.. "thumbnail" or whatever for the picture. Which is nice.

jjlava

Posted by jjlava 6 years ago Report

That makes sense, there's no easy way around that for drawing.

However if all you want is a thumb nail then it might be possible to draw a sketch for every day (or whatever you feel like doing) during the weekend when you have that time to yourself.
But then there is the risk of the pictures not being relevant to each chapter so it's not really the perfect solution.

Really the best thing I could suggest is to find some space away from the people who would yell at you for presumably doing something you enjoy in your free time.

Try to buy the armor and kit for a small discount and offer to pay the remainder after we've completed a job. 70g -85G shoudn't be too hard a haggle.

While I'm confident it wouldn't be too hard to find someone willing to do the two person job with us I think we should start with the trial just so we can start buffing our sword... if for no other reason than to stop people from being rude about it.

AwokenedWispKP

Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report

It's 2+, meaning 2 is the minimal requirement that I personally suggest seeing as.. well, the three star difficulty is a big problem.

Graywolf18

Posted by Graywolf18 6 years ago Report

I did say two person job didn't I? I saw the 'plus', I was just being minimalistic. As for the star rating, it's our first time seeing it so I don't have anything to compare it's difficulty to. So it ain't got no meaning to me as of yet. ;)

Jogoon

Posted by Jogoon 6 years ago Report

We could probably see the full range of difficulties or have someone explain them at the tavern or 'adventurers guild'

AwokenedWispKP

Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report

The difficulties are more of a personal touch than something in world? I mean, in world it's probably marked as a super easy job. But essentially, at 3 stars.. Let's say it's pretty possible for Lyra to game over.

Jogoon

Posted by Jogoon 6 years ago Report

I would personally seek out some padded cloth armor over the leather, beyond that I would get the sheath then head to the general store and try to haggle the price to around 80 to 90 gold for the kit. Then we can head to the tavern, see if we can find anyone who is willing to help us with the courier job, or barring that see if there are any jobs that are a bit easier and we could possibly do by ourselves.

go to the tavern to see if there are any other missions that Lyra can do. and ask if there are people who would be interested in the mission : "A simple courier run". like that, if strong enough people want to do this mission, then let's try it. if not, take the mission to go into the dungeon, if nothing else is interesting to do.

as for the objects offered by the blacksmith, let's try to buy them with a small discount.

Well, I guess she's not THAT much taller than us. But still, flirting with taller people has never gone badly for us before, right? :V

Kartomic

Posted by Kartomic 6 years ago Report

Flirtation might lead to discounts, but if we do it poorly, it may annoy her and make prices go up. We must use this power wisely!

AwokenedWispKP

Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report

Pretty sure she said she wouldn't raise prices.

Kartomic

Posted by Kartomic 6 years ago Report

That she did. In that case, what have we to lose? :P

AwokenedWispKP

Rayen

Kartomic

Posted by Kartomic 6 years ago Report

While it will leave us short on funds, I do suggest we bite the bullet and purchase the sheathe, armor, basic adventurer's gear, and a backpack: investing in being prepared for anything is a must, imo. Show the blacksmith the earring we got from the wolf to see if she knows anything about it, inform her of how we got it (and also saved a forest sprite), and see if she might lower her prices just a bit for our heroism. If that fails, see if the Blacksmith has any work or tasks she needs help with, and do the same for when we go to purchase things from the general store. After we're geared up, go to the tavern and the Guild to look for work and other ways to help out around town: reputation in small places like these is just as valuable as gold!

Having TFs in this world work similarly to pokemon evolutions is really cool, and I'm keen to see what other kinds are in TRPG... as well as the TFs that Lyra can get.

So, we might be able to restore power to the Old One's sword by doing a dungeon trial? That is definitely something to keep in mind, but something tells me we ought to be better equipped physically and mentally before attempting it, as we don't know if we can leave the trial once we start it, or what the price of failure may be.

So Lyra can team up with other people? Awesome! We might try and find some help with the Ruin Supply quest at the Tavern, the Guild, or maybe even see if a few of the kobolds might be up for it.

AwokenedWispKP

Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report

I will state that for the duration of any given trial, you can't use the relic offered up. It kinda just stays back at the altar where you placed it, but luckily it can't be stolen while you're in there.

Kartomic

Posted by Kartomic 6 years ago Report

Oh, so it's not just the Old One's Sword that can be powered up with a 'trial', but other relics too? Or did I read that wrong.

AwokenedWispKP

Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report

Any relic that isn't completely restored can be powered up through trials. The old one's sword is a case of.. "This thing is going to need a lot of work before it is done"

jjlava

Posted by jjlava 6 years ago Report

Do you know if there is anywhere I could get a basic wooden pole cheaply? I can't really afford to buy a quality spear from you right now so I might try to make myself a makeshift one for right now.
And how much is your cheapest shield? I want to protect myself the best I can out there.

I'm sorry if all these questions are annoying but this is all a little new to me, looking at all the amazing things you can make is almost as breathtaking as you are.

Flirt and flatter her and her goods.

I'd suggest putting the point into Charisma, then just get all the necessities before checking the tavern for jobs, even simple jobs like tending a store would be financially good decision.

Tasks are a bit weird, in that typical jobs won't show up on them. Either way, seems like an idea.

Before we get all excited about spending our money, remember that the guard needs a few days to confirm our kill and reward us with the bounty. Plan for... maybe five days at the inn, 50 gold set aside. that means we can't buy everything. For now, get the leather armor and sheath, and break them in. I think i saw a training grounds in the sketch of the town, we should try and head there to take a few practice swings and get used to moving in armor and swinging our sword and dagger. A few days to mill around town and get used to things like adventurer's guilds, taverns, and so forth will be far more valuable than running off to our death the first chance we get. and if the reward for the wolf is decent, we'll be able to get more of the supplies we need to start our journey. The guard wasn't wrong for laughing at us at having a tough challenge with a fat wolf that couldn't move well.

AwokenedWispKP

Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report

That's fairly interesting, although it would make the next 10-20 pages painfully slow unless I skipped several days.

Kartomic

Posted by Kartomic 6 years ago Report

In this case, a timeskip may be preferable, and we could pick the story back up if/when Lyra gets payed for taking care of the wolf or not.

JScofi

Posted by JScofi 6 years ago Report

And, we could pick it back up if its been days and we're running low on cash before getting such a payment, forcing us to look for funds.

AwokenedWispKP

Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report

The point is kinda to look for funds now than relying on people.

JScofi

Posted by JScofi 6 years ago Report

i don't see waiting to be paid for work you've already done as 'relying on people'. Timeskips are fairly common in these adventure settings, when characters sleep, travel, or just mill about with no clear direction for a while.

AwokenedWispKP

Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report

I mean unreliable people. It would be bad to end up waiting all that time, doing nothing to actually HELP in the investigation.. only to end up not getting the money but being worse off for "Claiming to claim someone else's bounty" and having at least one guard wanting to have a smug chat with our PC that could end fairly poorly.

AwokenedWispKP

Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report

Ugh.. still tired. Ignore the "Claiming to Claim", it's just claiming someone else's bounty.

JScofi

Posted by JScofi 6 years ago Report

We're clearly not ready to face the wilds outside of town just yet, and its not someone else's bounty, we killed the beast, we get the reward.

The guard even told us we could wait.

JScofi

Posted by JScofi 6 years ago Report

Besides, a few days in town to train, and get used to the guild and tavern will give us time to find travelling companions too.

AwokenedWispKP

Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report

The guard also said that if someone else claimed the bounty on the same day, that Lyra would be assumed to be a liar trying to make a quick buck. It is also probably safe to assume that this would be moreso the case if said person was from the guild of official nitwits.

It's also quite likely that he lied about sending requesting to send guards to the Lab seeing as he'd actually need the Earring for that, and if he intended for Lyra to come along then he'd likely have grabbed her and taken her with him to get her set up for that.

As for sending people to confirm that the Ravenous wolf is in the area, it might not have been all that clear considering how weak it was, that wolf was considered incredibly dangerous and it had claimed several lives. They're not even going to send anyone to check on the first day to avoid word getting out, and just in case Lyra was fibbing about dealing with it and they lose an entire team of guards. Then they'll likely request the guild to send someone to confirm the kill, which no one really would want to go to avoid the risk of being eaten. Finally, they'd have to send some guards over, but by then enough time might've passed that they could assume that it moved on since and then the only ways to confirm the kill would be to find the entity bringing the forest back to life (who mind you would be avoiding people), or to head to the lab to see if they had a method of confirming the wolf's status should they had been its origin.

The whole thing was meant to be treated as an inconvenience for Lyra as she is a total stranger, and that she'd get this payment from the wolf bounty once she'd actually done something and came back.. and the reward would actually be higher if she confirmed the origin of the Tutorial boss, considering she bothered to take the earring off. I also have a reason not to immediately jump into a skip, especially one that would potentially last until "Chiri" finishes her job which I think she said could take her several weeks to a month.. just to wait for NPCs to sort things out on their own for a set up that was meant to end quickly after the first task had been completed.

Also, this is the first area.. I wouldn't instant kill someone for leaving the town and end my own interactive because people jumped straight into sub-plots without being fully prepared. But I was prepared for nothing major to happen for at least the first day. Beyond that I'll push things in a direction to get progression.

AwokenedWispKP

Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report

And no, you can't argue that "Well if it was meant to end after the first task was completed, then it wouldn't take them much time at all!", seeing as if Lyra actually gets something at least semi-significant done and gets noticed by the guard, they'll actually get off their asses and check immediately instead of pissfarting around due to the word of some rando whom they'd never seen before.

Call it getting inspired, or actually putting some trust in her. In an RP sense, they'd be much more willing to get things done as a result. Right now, they don't even think the wolf is dead since the forest hasn't been brought back yet. It'd be like walking into a bear den when you know there's a bear in the area.

JScofi

Posted by JScofi 6 years ago Report

Oh.... i see what's going on now. my plan is fine. But the guards are untrustworthy, and lyra is getting hazed. right. i still think a few days in town to practice swings is a good idea.

AwokenedWispKP

Posted by AwokenedWispKP 6 years ago Report

Then I should probably put your vote as "Check out the training grounds today, see what it's about", since there's still a lot of time before Lyra actually has to sleep.

Kartomic

Hmm... A very good idea, i think!

Jamesbrid

Put point in agility.
Buy everything except the sheath for sword it’ll need replacing to often.
Go to the training ground and learn something, and ponder bringing food when entering towns to give to hungry guards so they won’t try to bait you.
Ask if the smithy has any broken items for free or Cursed items.
Pat kobolds at in sometime.

TotallyRandom

Posted by TotallyRandom 6 years ago Report

Well, we should buy everything. Even though we are almost broke afterwards.

First quest should be the courier run. We need money and we don't know if we get any from the trial. Maybe we can find some bait, eh I mean companions at the guild.

AwokenedWispKP
