Monsters Rule By HeroSoulSword -- Report

A commission I ordered from Damnitshuge.

Uh-oh, it's a Mon series showdown: Pokemon VS Monster Rancher, fighting for supremacy. And it looks like Pixie has "defeated" XY protagonist (or rival if you picked Calem as your PC) Serena. Looks like Monster Rancher takes home the trophy today (and a free meal, too). Serena must've tasted really good to Pixie, much better than potatoes. Monsters rule indeed.

Note that, as a fan of both series, this was mostly just for fun and to playfully rib at their "competition". But, I will admit one thing: Pokemon is losing its luster. Ever since Gen V ended (in the main games) and the XY anime ended the series' quality has dropped (quite harshly in some cases), while Monster Rancher, despite being more of a cult favorite, has been more consistent in terms of quality and has started to make a comeback. If you're wondering what I mean, Monster Rancher 1 has been recently released on mobile phones and Switch in Japan, with Monster Rancher 2 getting the same treatment sometime this year, both getting some new QoL updates, online tournaments and even new monster breeds.

I will admit that Pokemon has lost a lot of appeal to me due to the declining quality (going through another one of my semi-monthly interest cycles certainly helped). While I don't hate Pokemon, I will admit it's losing a lot of its luster, while other Mon genres like Digimon and Monster Rancher are starting to become more appealing (it helps that both series tend to tackle more mature themes, especially since Digimon shifted gears to cater to adults over kids starting with Cyber Sleuth). So, while I still like Pokemon, and this is by no means bashing it, it's lost a lot of its appeal as of late while Monster Rancher has started to gain momentum again.

Also, a bit of trivia for you, every breed of monster from Monster Rancher 1 and 2 appeared in the anime with the exception of Doodle and Living Disc (they'd probably be pretty hard to work in the anime, anyway), so at least none of the monsters suffered the same fate as the Porygon line and Kadabra.

I feel the same way, especially where pokemon started its decline. I could only play the Isle of Armor DLC to a certain point before getting bored. At least Mystery Dungeon games are still going.

Shin Megami Tensei is a good monster battling game that hasn't deteriorated. It's not only mature, but very controversial. Those games are also very difficult. They take a long time to come out, but they're far more polished than recent pokemon games.

I also backed a game called Kindred Fates. It's like every pokemon player's wet dream. Good monster designs, real time combat, challenging gameplay, and a promising story will all be part of the game. There will be 156 monsters according to kickstarter which isn't bad when you consider all their ambitions. The devs said on their Discord channel it won't be out until 2023 at best.
