A trip to uncertainty,

A slice of life short story. Guest chrs from DavianJ (The Deer) and Perpessio (The female wolf)

Sharue felt paws guide her out of the vehicle she was in. Unlike the past, these paws were not harsh, but they were firm. Guiding her to keep her head down and help her down out of the tall military rig.

“Last step inmate.”

That came from one of the DoC officers, a deer on the short side but it looked like he had been doing the job for some time with his bionics and more tired tone. The female officer who was helping her not hit her head was quiet and more alert. The two had rushed her out of her cell she was calling home in an military base away from the main colony. Ever since the incident with her abilities they had been very cautious with her.

Thankfully they had not decided to just kill her out right, if anything they wanted to know more. It didn’t help that they were treating it like a disease though. The federation had a hard time accepting that there were things out side the realm of reality and it really caused issues with their cultural beliefs of no gods or spiritual beings.

“And up.” This time from the female allowing Sharue to stand and look around. They had drove for over an hour to get to a smaller colony that was working the west reactor. The terraforming of the planet required several colonies, and this was one of the smaller ones. They had to get her back to 708 and they were supposed to have used an aircraft.
“So why are we at the train station?” Sharue asked as if to finish her line of thinking. Now normally if she was still in the Imperium’s prison she would have been dropped hard for talking out of line like that. The guards would not have appreciated the tone or the question.

The female, wolf? Sharue was unsure of her race, was the one that responded with a annoyed tone of.

“You can thank the DoC Director. He canceled all the flights to this area.”

Sharue knew only a little of the Director but she did know that he was not one that liked her or her team that had been brought here. Rumor was that his son had been killed in incident that she had caused. That made her feel a bit anxious thinking that he was trying to cause issues.

Today was a stressful day just overall. She was going to be brought before the DoC council to go over her parole hearing. If they approved it, she would have temporary sanctuary and the ability to work on her citizenship, if she failed, she would be sent back to the Imperium. That last bit would be a death sentence and she didn’t know if she could go through it again.

That was when her knees went a bit weak and her tears welled up some. It had been over six months that they had been working with her to help her, un package so to say, all the crap she had gone through.

In a way she was grateful to have this chance, to have a warm meal and not fear being beaten or killed. On the other hand it had made her feel weak by slowly pulling down the wall she had put up to defend herself from this very thing. It made her upset to feel this way and that she had to deal with these emotions where before she just simply buried them. Though if she didn’t deal with them, they would never let her stay.

Both officers took her arms to keep her from going down. “Easy, once were on board I will get you your medication.” The deer said.

“Thank you, sir.” Sharue didn’t know their names just that they were moving her. They were from the location she was at but she hadn’t dealt with them much. One thing she did look forward to, was seeing Edmond again. She had grown fond of that officer, though she and he had a bit of a rocky start.

That was when she became more aware of her surroundings. This was no military station, citizens of all ages and races were about waiting for their monorail to arrive. Blinking Sharue looked about in a bit confusion and then embarrassment.

Not only had she almost let her feelings slip but she was dressed up in a green jump suite, a security waist belt on with her wrists cuffed to the front of it. She had a collar on, and due to her sleeves rolled up, you could see her prison number tattoo.

Others were staring and that was one of the largest things that upset her. The Federation was nicer but it was also much more judgmental. Something she never had to feel while in the imperium beyond being a psyker. Now she had to feel that being psyker was an issue on top of others just looking down at her for being an inmate.

Trying to keep her eyes from meeting others she just sort of looked ahead and down a little.

“Let’s take her through the south gate, usually not as many people there.”

“Agreed.” The feline added as they started to lead her off. Thankfully her feet were not hobbled allowing her to walk freely. Another difference between 505 and here was she would have been on a leash or some sort of restraint device, here though, she was allowed to walk between them with out them really doing much. Just guiding her and trusting her to fallow without issue.

The guard at the gate gave her a look though as the group came up. The deer offering up some papers for the guard to see before he radioed in. It took a bit as they checked over the paperwork allowing Sharue to look about. The train was something she had never seen before. Much of their culture was new, and to be honest, exciting to see.

“What’s your name?” The question took her by surprise as a female mouse had joined the group. She wore an uniform and she was looking over the paperwork.

“Huh?”

“Your name hun, I need your name and ID.”

“P-6…” pausing she cleared her throat. They wanted her real name; it was still taking her time to get use to that. “Sharue Silvermoon.” The fox pulling her wrists to the side to move her belt so she could get into her uniforms pocket. A small plastic card with her face and information being brought out.

Another quirk, that they would trust an inmate to give the right information. Normally the guards would have done all that in 505.

The Federation was horrible with paperwork though. Sometimes Sharue was sure that they had paperwork on just being able to breath. Rules on this, rules on that, don’t do this. Granted there were rules in 505 but there were just over all rules. Such as obey the guards, work your sift, don’t die.

Here in the federation there were so many social laws and rules, specially about your body, that just confused and angered her. The first night in the prison in 708 she had busted the nose of another female inmate that had made fun of her chest size and called her a slut, until then she hadn’t even known what slut meant or that it was derogatory. Before she had broken her nose though, the group had let her know in quite a frustrating fassion. That got her landed in solitary for a bit, then she was told that she should maybe wear a less form fitting uniform.

She couldn’t have sex because it would be considered rape due to her not being able to consent, that one she learned from Edmond after she had made an advance on him. Embarrassed the hell out of her and angered her in the same go. You had to fracking smile at everyone and put on a fake front just to keep everyone at ease…

She interrupted that line of thought as Sharue knew it would only work her up. She needed to get her head back on straight because if she fracked this up she would lose her only chance to escape the Imperium. Not only that but if she messed this up it might set a precedence and the others that had came with her could be in danger too.

505 would not look kindly to those who helped her escape that was for sure.

“Ok here you go.” The female mouse handed her card back and she watched them as they radioed in about having an inmate on board. “We cleared out three rows for you.” The two officers nodded and soon started to guide her to the train.

Even though she was trying to avoid eye contact with others, she couldn’t help but look over the train and the structures about. That was when someone bumped into her.
Her knee jerk reaction kicked in and she bared her teeth and jerked her head in the direction of who ever bumped into her. “The frack you want!” She snapped out, her fur bristling. A small child lay on the ground having been playing with friends and was looking up at her with a good bit of fear.

A harsh jerk of her arm jerked her away from the cub as the mother came running up apologizing to the guards.

The female assured the mom that it was ok as Sharue tried to calm herself.

“Well I see you have a nasty side to you still.” The deer commented making Sharue glower a bit. The mom was looking her way worried and the child looked rather scared as he was pulled away.

“I am working on it sir.” She forced out and then tried to force a smile.

The deer gave her a look. “That smile looks scarier than when your mad.”

That set her off as she let it drop and flexed in his grip. He had been the one to yank her away from the situation. Feeling her tense back up he gave her a firm shake and shook his head. It was still hard for her to control her temper, but she knew right now she needed to do her best. It took a bit but eventually that fake smile came back up. Both the officers were looking at her expecting her to do something. This was probably the hardest part for her, what did they expect? What fracking social law was she supposed to do?

“I’m sorry, you startled me please forgive me.” She finally said to the family bowing her head a little bit. Sometimes she didn’t know what hurt more, 505 or sometimes putting on this fake smile.

“Come on let’s get you on board.” A soft tug at her arm had her moving to the train. Not that she minded, anything to get her out of the stressful situation that she was in.
Once on they moved to a section and the pair helped her seat and buckle in. At least the cushions were comfortable.

Having a window seat helped keep her mind off things as she kept her gaze staring out at the buildings and the desert waste land. Occasionally she would look up at the sky as if an unknown threat lurked there. Closing her eyes, she silently gave a prayer to anyone that would listen.

That was when the train lurched and then started to take off. It surprised her how fast the train had shot off and soon it was zipping across the wastes at a high rate of speed. For the most part Sharue kept quite though her ears were always moving.

“So why did we have to use a civ line?” The female was asking the male officer. “DoC Director like I said.”

“And why didn’t they just push off the meeting then?” The female was a bit annoyed at being forced to use a civilian line of transportation.
“Politics, the colonel wanted it now she he approved her for transport via civ. They sent a decoy transport out as we left to use the rim rock road.”
That got the female curious as she paused. “A decoy? They expect trouble?”

Sharue saw the male shrug out of the corner of her eyes before he responded.

That was one thing she had to remind herself, while most knew of her and how she acted very few actually knew she was not from this nation and was a psyker. That was a highly guarded secret to most. She could just imagine the shit show that would happen if others found out that this nation, who has not even invented full FTL or warp travel, had contact with beings outside their nation. Hell, they were probably tearing the ship apart that they had been rescued from, let alone the fact that daemons were real would throw their atheist beliefs into pure chaos. She was dangerous in more ways than just being a psyker. She hoped that fear didn’t translate into their choice to allow her sanctuary though.
Giving a sigh she assumed the guards here just thought she was another inmate with mental issues. It was probably for the best. If she could get them to accept her then she could maybe hide here from the Imperium.

Giving a sigh Sharue resigned herself to looking out the window and watching the sands pass by. She would have to do her best and hope. Hope was a dangerous thing because it gave you something to lose but at this point, she was willing to take that chance.

It takes place in my 40k setting farther along. The incident will be part of the canon chapters that are being released.

So there's a "Federation" outside the Imperium of Man in this setting?

Something I made up, a sub set of the imperium that was segregated from them during the horus heresy thus after their decline and rebuild t hey lost much of the imperial way of life and is their own thing.
