The TLDR of it is, the man was doing these illegal fights so that his trainer (the woman that steps in afterwards) can afford a new gym, after she vores both of them, she tries to leave to release them, but the fight organiser forces her to digest them against her will, then pays her off, she gets her new gym but everything is now hollow and meaningless, because the one person she wanted to share it most with is now dead because of her.

But remember there's buncha guards and, it is not explained well on the animation, but from the original story, Kim did try to convince Athena to regurgitate him. But she wasn't willing to. It might take even longer to make him out on the ring
