Twice a year, the GAC holds tryouts to enlist new members to its ranks. These tryouts consist of a variety of tests, such as academic knowledge, field work, and combat skills. Standard-issue military assessment, you understand. And while no single test determines someone's success (its not like the GAC expects a Lapis Lazuli to defeat a Hessonite with fisticuffs), they expect some competency in every field. Who knows if enemy assailants will infiltrate a starship? If a Peridot can't swing a wrench to save her life, then she's a liability to the cause.

And the GAC has high standards. They regularly turn away 72% of applicants. Gems are fine to reapply year-after-year, but after the fifth failure, the GAC won't accept future attempts. No need to waste everyone's time. Aaaaaand extra fat failures might wind up a snack if NCP attends an enlistment ceremony.

"Pffft! What a pathetic excuse for a mercenary! You lost the training match under a minute of fighting! Go. Leave! You're not worthy of the GAC. Don't bother to reapply either, Miss Fifth Attempt. You'll be screened. Just be grateful that I don't Assimilate you for whatever meager power you possess. You'd probably give me indigestion, pathetic worm."
