An interesting usage of the fact that the Giant Tree is, well, giant. You could probably have an entire series of books that dealt solely with the happenings on and within the tree.
My thoughts indeed! It's a "world tree", in a sense - and there's plenty of that in myth and literature. Much of it is still seemingly "unexplored" by the main characters.
