the lore is writen by the commissioner "Bucket"
NYMPHS:
The Nymphs are fundamentally unique from other sentient races in that they are an entirely female race that can trace their origins back to vegetation rather than mammalian ancestors. Although other plants exist in the land of Villia that are capable of highly coordinated motor function (such as the Mawpod), these other plants are little more than primitive ‘beasts’ compared to the alluring and socially intelligent Nymphs. There are two sub-species of Nymphs, known respectively as 'Leaflings' and 'Sporlings', and although what follows is generally true for both species, there are some major exceptions to their behavior patterns and physiology. For example Sporlings are fungus based, and as they are native to the dark and hostile region of the Verd they are generally far more aggressive and callous than the gentle and loving Leaflings who exist above ground.
All Nymph societies are broken down into ‘Gardens’, a civilized structure which can be thought of as a combination of the hive mentality exhibited by organized insects such as ants and bees, and that of the tribalism exhibited in early humans. There is a Root-Mother at the head of the society; an extremely rare and special Nymph who is marked out for greatness by the long flowing vines that make up her hair. At the end of summer she will cease her youthful wanderings and give into the loving call of the soil from whence she ultimately came, rather than returning to the original Root-Mother who ‘grew’ her along with her sisters. As the name implies, these Root-Mothers normally plant themselves in a sunny glade or overlooking their favourite view and proceed to draw nutrients and energy from the ground, allowing them to grow exceptionally large, typically reaching about four to five times the size of normal Nymphs. It is in this state that a Root-Mother must wait patiently, for she will require the ‘spark of life’ from a passing male in order to begin her own ‘Garden’; allowing her to grow a flock of Nymphs to call her own, loyal follows whom she will develop a symbiotic and loving relationship of mutual care and adoration. The Root-Mother will guide and defend her daughters, and they in turn they will gather food and care for her, although their care-free natures sees them frolicking and playing a great deal of the time too!
There are many predators in the lands of Villia however, as well as the bite of winter itself, and so it is the size and permanence of the Root-Mothers that make them immune to these otherwise deadly forces. The lives of her little Nymphs are short lived however, their bodies gracefully swelling from the ground in Spring full of youth and vitality, but without a permanent connection to the Earth and the inability to hibernate, they eventually long to become one with their Root-Mother once more as the seasons change. Autumn therefore marks the ‘Feast of Fall’ whereby the Nymphs return to their Root-Mother in great numbers, simultaneously providing her with the energy and nourishment she needs to survive winter, but also ensuring that their individual life-force and personalities are preserved through till next Spring where they will grow once more into the warm sun, well-rested and closer than ever to their loving Root-Mother.
The picture above features a particularly successful Leafling Root-Mother called Jaleen enjoying the 'Feast of Fall' with her many daughters! Jaleen's little leaflings give themselves willingly, excited to all be as one again in the warmth and safety of their Root=Mother's belly! Jaleen has lived a great many years and chose to take root in the hollow of an old oak as she felt sorry for the decrepit tree, and she has made it her life's work to nurse it back to health. As with all good things in Nature her relationship with the great oak has become symbiotic, and a degree of her own size and success can be attributed to the protection the great oak offers her in winter, and the many acorns it sheds as food for her entire Garden! Jaleen is also fond of the many hours of uninterrupted sunshine the clearing before her provides, and she glows with a radiance and warmth for her daughters that is unparalleled even in a sub-species known for its benevolence and compassion.

Well, that's an interesting one! I kind of wonder what's going on there. Hibernation? Regeneration? ...Mulching? :P

I read the lore as well. I find it pretty good actually. It makes sense in a fantasy setting.

Strike 3 on the lore, thank you very much :)
Posted by vasp 10 years ago Report
Strike 3? Oh, wait I see. I know you're the one behind the lore but I suppose how I wrote my previous comment makes it seem as if I was attributing it to bigbig, sorry for that.
Posted by Bucket 10 years ago Report
Oh no sorry, no need to apologize! I was just amazed that three people had read it :D

So many tasty prey for that magnificent belly.

That is an interesting concept, world and your take on it, BigBig. I'm normally not a fan of size play, heavier set images, but when they have a good backstory like this... Wow.
And the soul vorist and mutualist/symbiosis lover in me... Though I guess I should hold off praising that side of the concept to Bucket, hehehehe.
