He thought if he had a magical painting of himself made, it'd take all of his bad luck onto itself. It didn't work, and he lost the painting when it fell into a magical portal that ended up depositing it on Dumbledore's desk.
But at least Hogwarts has an Ankh-Morpork wizard painting on it's wall.
