> Try to listen in

You decide to see what you can hear before you find a way inside. You hear a couple voices in an argument It's difficult to make out what they're saying, but you recognize one of the voices as Edris. She seems to be angrily shouting. The door is old and has some cracks in it, so you try to peer inside.

You see Edris pointing Nysk's crossbow at the powerful bandit with the strange hairstyle. She seems to be threatening him. Edris also holds a bloody sword in her other hand. A little ways behind Edris, you spot Myla chained up against a wall! You can tell that she's been heavily abused. She's unconscious and covered in cuts and bruises.

The situation is both bad and confusing. Myla looks like she doesn't have a lot of time left, but Edris is acting strangely. Why would she be threatening her own people? You quickly explain to Garrett what you see.

"What do we do?" He seems heavily concerned. "If Myla's as bad as you say, then we can't waste anymore time!" You nod to him.

The bandit's arguement is interrupted when the door is suddenly kicked in by Garrett. The centaur, two soldiers, and you rush inside. The large bandit takes advantange of Edris' distracted self and grabs her arm, attempting to make her release the crossbow. A bolt fires, narrowly missing him. With a quick twist, a crack is heard from Edris' arm and she releases the weapon with a painful yell.

However, a powerful rage appears in her eyes, and before the larger bandit can react, she swipes at him with his sword, gashing his chest. He pulls back, clutching his wound and turning towards you.

"Can you see now, Edris?!" He motions toward your party. "They're here, just like the boss said! It's over! If you want to die fighting, then go ahead." He starts backing up towards another door that leads outside. "We're bandits, we can't fight the military. We're surrendering." He turns back to you. "Be careful! She's lost her damn mind! She's already killed the boss!" With that, he turns and stumbles out the door.

"Coward!" Edris yells after him. You're not really sure what to make of this scene, but you stay on your guard. The other bandit broke her left arm, and she only has her short sword now. Even so, you feel an incredible amount of rage from her.

The room is dimly lit by a few torches. Against one of the walls lies a blond-haired elven bandit, dead, with several bolts in him. You assume he was the new boss. One of the soldiers steps forward towards Edris. "Brigand, drop your weapon and surrender. The Alliance is ready to allow reduced punishments for your crimes if you can provide information pertaining to-"

"No." Edris speaks firmly, never taking her eyes off of you. "You're alive. Of course you are." You lift your sword in a defensive position. You're honestly not sure what is going on with the elf right now. She sheaths her sword, freeing up her hand to reach in her bag.

Pulling her hand back out, she is holding something. You instinctively take a step back, once you realize what it is. In Edris' hand is a glowing blue crystal. The same type of crystal that killed Nysk.

"A parting gift from our mutual 'friend'." The elf tightly grips the crystal.

Hehehehe jackie chan adventures throwback line, try to get Garret to shoot the crystal out of her hand it should become inert if it doesn't have enough power provided

Humbug

Posted by Humbug 8 years ago Report

Get Myla out of there. Edris is going to self-destruct anyway, if Nysk is any indication. Dunno if you can manipulate stone with your earth magic, but if you can, just pop out the bits of wall she's attached to and carry her off.

Otherwise, you're gonna have to fight her and hope she or someone else has a key. You can't break those chains yourself.

Yup, shoot the crystal, someone... then we can maybe arrest Edris with the rest of the bandits. Then we can start getting some answers out of them regarding what's going on with all these crazy crystals n' things.

Also the idea of Myla's tits covered in cuts and bruises is... hot. I wonder if they kept her clothes on or not. I know I wouldn't. :v

Oh no! How did she get that? At any rate, Myla is alive, which is good.

She is beat up, which is bad.

Afro guy seems to hve broken Edris's arm, which is good.

He has been slashed, which is bad.

I am not sure what to do next. Telling Edris to "let Myla go!" can only give her weird ideas on what to do to Myla, just to spite us.

Is she close to Myla? if there is enough distance between them, we fly upwards so that she has to either stop looking at us to check on the other soldiers, or keep staring at us and open her guard for an attack from Garret or the other soldiers.

If she looks away from us, we fly over where Myla is and place ourselves inbetween the enraged lunatic with the crystal and the beat up wolf girl.

If she keeps looking at us... I just hope the soldiers and/or Garret take a hint and try and attack her, distracting her attention from us.

Cast Stone Shield to block Edris or any friendly fire from hitting Myla. Have the soldiers block the door and screen us while Garrett and Floria attack from range. Edris will have to come to us if she wants to do any damage. Our next spell should be rock bomb or Flamestream depending on how close Edris gets to us. Rock bomb if she doesn't make it to melee range before we get another spell or BURN EVERYTHING if she does.

Stone shield idea: check. Soldiers block door: check. Shoot the crystal: nope.

We don't know what'll happen if we shoot it. We ask Garrett to shoot her hand holding the crystal. At the very least, it'll stagger her for a bit.

If we succeed or the shot misses, Garrett should get to Myla and try to free her. If he can, he should get her to the doc in Malor ASAP. I hope he's still there.

Us and the soldiers can handle Edris.

Once she's beaten (and if she's still alive) we interrogate her ourselves.

Jondo

Posted by Jondo 8 years ago Report

You may be right. I was thinking more along the lines of a deterrent than anything else though. We want Edris to think Myla is out of the battle even if our wall is actually paper thin. If she does, I'd hope the wall would be strong enough to allow Floria and Garrett enough time to get across the room before Edris stabbed Myla.

ArgobargSoup

Posted by ArgobargSoup 8 years ago Report

Somethin' is tellin' me that... she might not be plannin' ta use the crystal on herself.

Shootin' it out of her hand might be an idea, but I'd think a better idea would be ta trip her up. We'd have ta do somethin' quick-like, maybe castin' a stone wall stealthily by makin' motions like we're castin' somethin' else or disguised as a command; there's too many people she could try and stab with that crystal.

TotallyRandom

KinoTheCat

Get garret to shoot hte crystal. And then tell him to run or stay towards the back of the fight.

Send a heal towards Myla if possible, move towards her the best we can, but keep an eye on Edris seeing as she's focused intently on you.

Let the soldiers know what that crystal does. Its from the Masked Man and will give Edris increased speed and strength. They need to be aware that this crystal will make her incredibly strong, even if she has a broken arm.

In fact, if we can get all of the soldier's ranged units to shoot Edris that'd be awesome.

Put up a stone wall between Edris and Myla. If her goal is to make our victory as bitter as she can, then we need to screen Myla from her. x3

If we need to get to Myla to heal her, maybe we can leave some room at the top open so we can fly over? Is the room tall enough for that?

Agree with the stone shield and snipe method. If that's a bomb, we have to shield Myla and the party from any damage. Ideally, we can have Garrett, snipe it out of her hands, but we need assurance in case that doesn't work out.

AtmosRobot

Edris is gonna throw that crystal. At whom, that is not known. But it looks like the crystal needs to contact the skin in order to affect its target. Which means that Floria, Garrett, and Myla are the only feasible targets here, as the guards are most likely armored from head to toe.

AtmosRobot

Posted by AtmosRobot 8 years ago Report

If we want Floria to have the best chance at surviving, she should cast Stone Shield and protects herself. I have a very strong feeling Edris is going to throw the crystal at Floria. It would ensure her death eventually and Edris seems to really have it out for her.

In the case that someone gets crystalized, book it out of the stronghold and tell Marcus to suit up!

davidargall

Posted by davidargall 8 years ago Report

Nyst was killed by a touch. Of course, that produced crystals and this crystal looks like it. So maybe a sentence saying we don't know what this crystal will do, but assume it will be bad, likely fatal.
The advice to talk it out remains best. We are the most likely target of that crystal, so we must stay on top alert, watching Edris closely for a hint of when she will throw, and in what direction. We have to be ready to dodge So we become the designated target, and try to make her miss.
But we try to make her not throw at all. Talk. Tell her she she can get out from under if she surrenders. If she fights, things will go badly for her. Keep on talking, mostly calmly and gently. Make us the center of Edris' attention. Get her ignoring the other three.
If we are lucky, Edris will surrender. But she is acting like a lover and so she may value revenge over her life. So be very careful. Acting scared may get her to delay throwing as she enjoys "torturing" us.
We don't hint to the others, but we can hope they find a good chance to intervene. Garrett claims to be a good shot, and can maybe shoot the crystal. But a miss will cause a throw. So we don't encourage this, but we do try to distract Edris so Garrett has plenty of time to aim if he tries this.
If Edris orders the others to leave, encourage them to leave. From a distance, they may find it easier to shoot or something. Don't encourage too much. Surrounding Edris is a better way to capture her and would be superior if she wasn't in a killing mood. Remind her that she only gets 1 shot and there are 4 of you. If she surrender, she may get another chance when the odds are better...
Ignore Myla as much as possible. Anything we do will just get Edris' attention of this easy target.

AtmosRobot

Posted by AtmosRobot 8 years ago Report

If you can find a way to draw a conversation out of "A parting gift from our mutual 'friend'", by all means, be our guest. The tone of Edris's remark tells me that the time for talk is over. She's closed the conversation. Hopefully she gets a bad dexterity roll.

davidargall

Posted by davidargall 8 years ago Report

Quite possibly she intends to throw right away, which is why we should be ready to dodge. But if she hesitates, we have time for "you don't want to do this", "you are just going to hurt yourself", and/or "relax, we don't want to kill you..." Continue to talk...

Have Garret get Myla out of there now! Worst case scenario at this point is Edris infusing Myla with that crystal and cause her to attack us!Myla is chained, so either we break the chains or use magic (recommending) to do so.

The afro bandit might be of use, better than Edris was. Perhaps have him make her drop the crystal, getting him a lighter sentence if he cooperates. He's desperate to get out of this alive, but will it be quick enough?

Yeah, if someone can shoot that out of her hand, that would be great. If we don't have someone with a ranged weapon for that, can we make an attempt to dis-arm her? Might be a bit brutal, but if the arm is no longer attached, it won't make her crazy strong.

Also, nobody say shit about Myla right now. She's crazy enough to try and kill our friend if she knows we care.

I change my mind. Shoot crystal, put up stone wall bewteen her and Myla THEN beat her down. Don't eat her in front of the the military. We don't want to ruin our relationship with them.

replicated

Posted by replicated 8 years ago Report

Definitely have Garrett try to shoot the crystal out of her hand, or shoot her in the hand and make her drop it. Healing Myla would be good if we have the time to without opening ourselves to bad things from Edris.

The idea of trying to use flight to make it so Edris can't keep an eye on -everything- at once is good if we have the room to do so.

Offering afro bandit a pardon for his help may be overstepping our bounds, but offering to do anything actually within our power to get his punishment reduced/pardoned wouldn't, and while he may not be eager to fight her, having another (temporary) ally could be nice.

Stop the crystal! Letting that thing fuse to her might lead to VERY BAD TIMES! Shoot it out of her hand, or chop the hand off. We have got to eliminate the threat of the crystal.

Why bother with a small target like the Crystal? Have Garret and the soldiers aim for Edris's head, while Floira cast Firestream and goes for the repeating crossbow.

Moxx

Posted by Moxx 8 years ago Report

So, again, Edris confuses me.

She refers to the Ancient as our mutual 'friend' — note the quotes. Neither she nor Floria are friends with the Ancient, and calling him that is solely because its a sort of code, given that the only two people here who know what it could mean are herself and Floria (Myla being unconscious, and Afro being unconscious when it all went down before).

So it's a threat, and a threat that only one other person in the room realizes the risk of.

She's held onto it until now, not using it against the 'boss', nor Myla, nor Afro. It was held in reserve for emergencies. And Floria counts as an emergency.

The note she left with Floria back before birb mentioned that Floria wouldn't be seeing her "friends" (plural) again. Yet Garrett got away and easily made it back to town. Only Myla was captured.

Why did the boss capture Myla? (The boss/dead blond elven bandit is most likely the one that cold-cocked Floria back in 2-73.) Why did he let Floria go? Why did Edris kill him? He expected us to be back; to what end?

If they're just surrendering to the soldiers, then the expectation was that Floria would be a threat, and thus should have been killed; yet the note we got goes explicitly against that. If we weren't viewed as a threat, then there should have been no expectation that we would be back, which goes counter to what he told Afro. Edris couldn't have betrayed the elven leader to leave us alive, because then the boss wouldn't have expected us to be back, and the reaction of Afro would have been far different. If the boss expected us to be back, why even stay in the fortress? They all knew about the soldiers coming; if they expected Floria as well, why did they even stay here??

Grrr... None of this makes sense!

OK, the boss let us go, and expected us to come back. He kept Myla alive in the meantime. So whatever minimal value there was in holding Floria hostage was surpassed by whatever value there would be in whatever she brought back with her to the fortress. And the only thing she brought with her would be... the power armor? Though they would have no way of expecting that to be brought along, nor would Floria's presence change whether they brought it.

OK, there's a clue. It has something to do with the power armor (big ol' Chekov's Gun). What value is there in the current situation that would allow the bandits (or whoever the bandits work for) to acquire the armor?

And suddenly, I must ponder a link between the crystal and the power armor. Crystals are common sources of power, right?

When did Edris encounter the Ancient, to get the crystal? During her side trip? Or more recently, after kicking us out? Or did she recover some from the battle site?

Did he do something to her? (Is that why she seems to be going mad?) Was she in league with him from the beginning? (Seems ridiculously unlikely.)

Would the crystal even work on anyone here? The Ancient said he had no use for 'animals', when discussing the crystals. No one here now is a human species, aside from the soldiers. What would it do to any of them? (And then new idea: power armor crystal.)

So, possible line of thought:

The boss let Floria go while keeping Myla as bait, because Floria could be trusted to come back, while Myla wouldn't be trusted by the town guard.

The fortress is bait. They know the soldiers are coming, so they're 'surrendering', for the purpose of getting in amongst the soldiers and their gear. Ultimate goal: Their own suit of power armor.

However Edris has a higher goal: the Ancient. However even the power armor isn't enough for that. But if she scavenged some of the crystal that was left in Nysk when she died (and was presumably buried), that could give a boost to the power armor, potentially enough to at least start looking like a legitimate threat.

However boss elf is just a greedy bastard, and doesn't recognize the real potential value of what he's aiming for.

Of course, getting the power armor still isn't going to be an easy task.

Reply: "... You got that from Nysk? And plan to use it with the power armor?"

Moxx

Posted by Moxx 8 years ago Report

Glad you like it :)

Having more thoughts on the situation, if it follows my speculation. (If there's no deeper meaning behind the fight than another random encounter, then all this is moot.)

Edris probably did expect Floria to die. She thinks Floria is an idiot — for her fight against Nysk, for letting Edris out after eating her, for trusting Edris for far too many things after that. An idiot like that doesn't deserve to live. Yet she did, and she's back again.

So if Floria can prove to not be a complete idiot right now, when things are really serious, maybe Edris can actually come to accept her as a 'partner'. Because Edris intended to go it alone against the Ancient (the idiot Floria would just get herself killed, so it didn't matter if she died now or later).

If Floria breaks the crystal? Well, back to being a complete idiot. Even my reply above might be a bit much, since it could reveal her intent in front of the soldiers.

If we do join the crazy train, we have to get Marcus on board as well, since he's the only one who can pilot the armor. The 'how' of getting away with the armor, I'm rather fuzzy on at the moment. However, since we don't have a destination to head to right now anyway, we don't have to actually get the armor just yet; we just have to make up with Edris, and start talking with Marcus about our ultimate goal. (And he may be easier to convince than most, given that the Ancient killed one of his buddies that was coming to help us in the ambush before.)

And on a secondary note: I wonder whether the elven boss wanted to run before, and Edris stopped him? Re-reading things, there's a sense that Edris is the only one really wanting to stay here to fight, so the goal of the power armor might be more personal than bandit-wide.

And while the rage is there after her injury, it's entirely possible to read things as not being directed at Floria at all.

So overall, I'm staying with my previous response. Though if Floria can answer a bit more subtly than that, it would be fine; just don't want to get so roundabout that other readers misunderstand.

Rayen

Posted by Rayen 8 years ago Report

Well, I can say this much. It isn't a random encounter. I'm gonna put some sort of story point behind almost every encounter we do, I think.

It's just a question of if it's the main story or a side story. :V

TotallyRandom

Posted by TotallyRandom 8 years ago Report

I share your concern, that this whole thing is a trap. Allready commented on it at update 86. The day after Floria was left for dead, the bandits were allready preparing their defences, when Floria flew over the fortress. They couldn't expect Floria beeing back in Malor by this time. With all the dangers in the wood at night, Floria could easily be dead. This leads me to the assumption that the bandits knew about the attack, but didn't expect Floria to join in. And with her contribution so far, it wouldn't make a difference. No one seems to notice Floria's new form, so maybe the bandits didn't even recognize her. But the point still stands, they knew about the attack, they knew they have no chance and they stayed in the doomed fortress. The only reason to stay is, if they expected help, which brings the ancient and the crystals in to play.

Edris lied to us the whole time. Even her note about not seeing our friends again, was a lie. It's likely she lied about her relation with the ancient too and didn't share her knowledge. Or maybe the bandits are as stupid as Floria and Edris is just mad ;P

In any case, tell Marcus to get in the Seige armor to look badass and beat the shit out of Edris. And tell Garret to shot her in the legs, so she can't reach Myla, but stay alive for interogation by stomach.

And if anything goes wrong, I expect the eagles(harpys) coming to our aid.

Shhh, don't say the big theories around Rayen. Try to avoid how or why something happens (unless it's 1 or 2 sentences to try to influence Rayen), because he might take the worst parts of it and make a lager disaster. Try to stick to just stating the plan that would prevent the worst from happening (and maybe a sentence on what it counters).
Think of Rayen as an enemy who can create whatever he wants with magic. If that person locks you in a cell and you start rambling about what horrors can await you, as soon as you mention the thing you know you can't defeat, he creates it.

I really don't care how she dies lol she just has to die xD it's like every time she talks is like *ugh just fall on a pike please* (imagines floria dropping Edris on a pike) Though I would have wanted floria to nom her simply out of a "finish what you started" mentality lol

Well my idea was to shoot the crystal away from her, but I wouldn't cry if he missed her hand and shot her between the eyes. While I would find Floria dropping Edris on a pike amusing, I too would like to see her die in Floria's gut if at all possible. xD

Aim for her hand or the crystal, whichever is easier. Secondly, spread out: if she throws that thing and it explodes, we don't want to be grouped up. Next priority is Myla: I'm guessing Edris intends to take us with her, so plonk a shield in front of her.

Erdis is still out pet elf. And thus we apply RPG logic.

Open menu.
Select Erids
Unequip crystal.
Unequip clothes.
Equip rope
Equip ball gag

Question: The "transformed" status effect; does that refer to latent transformations that are part of becoming a birb, or totally separate transformations (such as the potion effects Myla went through)?

Also, only 9 days, wow a lot can happen in such a short time. And we've traveled, how closer are the towns?

I don't see anything in the posts about Myla or Edris leaving the party, so we could heal Myla while we're in the menu. (pay no attention to the party members page on the website)

If that actually works I'll laugh my ass off

Hmmmmmm.

Heal Myla? See if Garret can kick her hand and disarm the crystal? Can Garret kick the shackles and free Myla?

Poor Myla. :/
