I suspect it's because cats always behave with the intimacy that we want from our romantic companions. Cats will curl up in your lap without any prompting and drape themselves around the house in a way that other humans just don't. They also have an enticing mix of frantic energy, limitless patience, and imperturbable sloth that makes us envy them.
