Fastpaw is firmly of the opinion that a kender is more use to the world after being digested than before. Or maybe he just likes eating overly trusting, foolishly brave little people. Either way the result is the same: free fur coat for a kender. Kender #29, in this case.

Take a hobbit. Remove the hairy feet. Add uncontrollable kleptomania and a complete lack of any concept of personal space along with a bright chirpy voice. Then add their inability to understand that that stealing is bad and you have kender. Basically kender are that asshole thief guy who steals from his own party all the time, the race. And they are super innocent and cheerful so the stealing is totally not their fault and the DM is on their side so you're not even allowed to slap their grubby thieving hand or yell at them. That's kender.
Believe me, every time Fastpaw eats one the world gets just a tiny bit better.

He forgot little to no sense of self preservation. Honestly in the books they have to send people to hunt and return kindler that are getting married just to make sure they breed.

I thought halflings were generally hobbits with the serial numbers filed off. Are they different in that setting?

That is exactly correct, but the writers of the Dragonlance series wanted less hobbit-ey Hobbits so they made up Kender.
