“So she was just hiding in the cellar?” said Melody to Lauren. They were standing in front of Lauren’s farmhouse. Several paces away Nadalia was talking to her fellow Guard-Knight Thomas. Thomas had a pained expression on his face. Nadalia handed him the talisman with Calliope’s name on it. He accepted it with a nod. Nadalia started walking back towards Lauren and Melody

with a solemn look on her face. Lauren hated seeing Nadalia that way

The jungle reminded Lauren of the swamp, except less misty and hotter. Her sleeves were rolled up and her cloak was wrapped around her waist. She used her dagger to cut through limps and vines that crept too far into their path.

Fogweather was empty. Lauren and Nadalia saw no one as they walked its streets. It looked like any other village they had passed through. Shops and homes lined the way. Lauren had noted fresh tracks when they had entered the village. A thick, rolling fog – which gave the town its name – obscured their vision beyond several paces.

The sound of water lapping at the village docks pervaded the air.

Lauren woke up and immediately began gathering up her belongings. Once she had all her items, she left the inn room and headed downstairs. Upon arriving in the common room, she saw people she did not recognize sitting about eating bowls of porridge and downing mugs of ale that Amelin was handing out for a few coins. Lauren spotted Nadalia in the crowd of strangers sitting by herself at a table already fully suited to continue travelling. Nadalia waved to Lauren upon seeing her, and Lauren walked
