The
voyagers sailed east. The map Lauren thought led to their realm had
been lost in the excitement of Captain Vice’s awakening, and lost
further in the destruction of her vault, but the map had been simple
enough that she gleaned that all they had to do was sail east. The
schooner, they discovered, was named the M.G.S.
Gealach.
Captain Theresah directed Lauren and company on how to set the ship
so that it could sail on its own. Then, Captain Theresah brought a
dusty table and two chairs they

had her poleaxe out before Lauren could tell her to wait. Captain
Theresah and Allison drew their swords. Captain Theresah’s extra
hats fell off her head with the drawing motion. Valentina stared down
at the scene from her pile. The hurdy-gurdy player continued playing
the hurdy-gurdy. Clangs
and clashes
rang out from around the chamber. Muskets and pistols went off. Even
cannons roared. The dead had awoken to fight, and their captain was
laughing with a cordless voice.

Lauren
slept. She dreamt of drifting souls and sunken hearts. When Lauren
awoke, she awoke in a cold sweat. Lauren fell out of the hammock
trying to get out of it. She got to her feet and wiped off the sweat
on her face. Lauren grabbed her belt and bag. She attached her belt
to her waist and tied her bag to her back after taking out her cloak.
She donned her cloak and made her way to the main deck. Fluffy, gray

Officer Bellani applied an aloe salve to the burns on Lauren’s arms
and neck. Nadalia stood next to her. The lovers made idle chatter
while Bellani healed Lauren’s burns. After the expedition party
returned to the ship, Nadalia, Chelsea, and Barnard were there to
greet them. Strea and Valentina were off to the side in shade,
squinting and holding their heads. Nadalia had hugged Lauren, made a
comment about the burns, and the two had left to see Bellani at the
insistence of the ship�

Lauren
returned the rightful lead to Captain Theresah, so the captain could
search for the instrument they sought. Midafternoon arrived, and
Lauren wondered if they would have to return to the ship before night
fell. Captain Theresah took parchment out from her coat once in a
while and conversed with Allison, off to the side. These
conversations never took more than two minute, so the island
expedition group travelled at a semi-steady pace. Once the first

“Now,
let me stop you right there,” Quartermaster Allison said. “I’ve
no idea what a Djinn is, but it sounds like you’re in a bad spot.
Don’t separate from the group. Not on this island.”
“How

Captain Theresah said. “You are not the only victim of these
washups.”
Captain Theresah swung

Melody, Nadalia, and Captain Theresah’s boots thudded onto the deck
of the Hushed
Bride.
Barnard stood next to the ladder for their arrival. Some of the crew
had returned to the top deck to help the sail the ship. Valentina

Lauren started focusing her body on healing whatever might have been
damaged by the hit of the Supreme Succubus’ tail. Lauren blinked
several times to clear the fuzziness from her eyes. “Damn this
whole mess. Got to find Nadalia.” She pushed against the giving

cannonball soared over Lauren’s head. She instinctively ducked. Two
hours after Macy had spotted the pirate vessel, the Hushed
Bride had
sailed within cannon-firing range of the pirate vessel. Before the
Bride
ran about the vessel, the pirate ship had been sailing neither in the
direction of Fercusa, nor towards the Bride.
Lauren had adjusted her vision to get an early peek at the vessel.
The ship was two-masted, smaller than Captain Theresah’s vessel.

raced back to the university, appreciating the feelings the shrunken,
slumbering Dragoness gave her in her intestines. McRulus University’s
campus was silent and empty like the rest of Fercusa. She hurried
into the library and up the stairs to the second level. Nadalia and
Captain Theresah were reading and taking notes as they had been doing
when Lauren left. She smiled upon seeing them, and then her smile
faded to a neutral expression when she remembered that she would have
