When the deck's stacked against you, and you just want a way out of the game, what would you do? Stubbornly fight till the end, or relent, and let the cards fall as they may? If you're like the Gormotti bounty hunter Nia, you might just choose the latter.
After getting roped into a job way beyond anything she signed up for, she's found herself in the custody of the Ardanian military, and they want to cut a deal with her in an attempt to prevent the reemergence of the all-powerful Aegis. Only thing is...why let herself be a third wheel in their scheme, when she could spearhead it, front and center?
Admittedly, this is a description I've tried writing a few times. Not just over the past day, but the past 20 months. I've tried being more personal, less, but nothing's really fit. So, heeere goes!
I have a bit of a long history with Xenoblade as a series, but unlike most...normal people, it doesn't start with the first game, or even 2 or 3. No, my history starts with X. The one-off spin-off set in a completely separate continuity that I STILL NEED CLOSURE ON, TAKAHASHI. Xenoblade X is my favorite game of all time, period. Sure, other games do things like story, characters, difficulty scaling, holy fuck I hate that final boss with every fiber of my being, all better than it, but that'll never take away from my love for it as a game.
It's something about this planet the sense of freedom and exploration the game gives you, especially once you unlock flight for your Skells, that is just so...beautiful. It's what made me want to spend the 350 hours I did in Mira, and similar to how games like Skyrim make me feel.
Okay Kiri, why are you rambling about Xenoblade X? Simple. X was my first open-world RPG, hell I wrote a college report on it, but more importantly; my love for it created an interest in Xenoblade as a franchise. So when 2 was announced in January 2017, I was immediately invested in seeing just what it had to offer. I got it along with my Switch that December, and nearly 6 years later...here we are.
I probably have 200 hours in Xenoblade 2 at the least, not including the Torna expansion. It is my favorite entry in the mainline trilogy, with some of my favorite characters period. It means a lot to me, and I always wanted to write something based around it...but just never found an idea that really clicked with me. Despite loving Mòrag, Nia, and Mythra, there was never anything I was really satisfied with, for one reason or another.
Cut to February 2022. For reasons I won't get into here, but close friends can probably remember, I was in a pretty low point in my life. That's all I'll say about it. But then, like some kind of divine intervention, Xenoblade 3 was announced in a Nintendo Direct. And my excitement was utterly through the roof. Hell, when I first saw the trailer, I completely missed the shot of the-then unnamed Agnus Queen, and straight up thought Mio just was Nia. ...Can you blame me though...
But that tentative August release window sparked something in me. The inspiration to finally, finally do something with Xenoblade. In my naiveté, I thought maybe I can have this out when 3 releases...nope. And then I thought, maybe I can have this out when the DLC releases, which...nope again! Got a birthday story out, but it sure wasn't this one.
Anyway, I've been working on-and-off on this story for, well, the past 20 months! Part of why it took so long was...besides life, the detail. I'm a stickler to a fault, and I had to describe the outfits to a degree that I felt did them justice. And can I just say, fuck Xenoblade 2 character design. Like, I like looking at them, but anything deeper than that? Pain. So much pain... It burnt me out on making any progress on this for aegis ages.
But there was still fun to be had! In particular, trying to replicate Nia's thick accent in text form. It was a fun kind of challenge, yknow? I hope I did the characters justice, I hope I did the world of Alrest justice, I hope I did some of the extraneous lore justice. I really did try my best. I owe them that much.
---------------
Anyway, I've spent...legitimately an hour and a half typing all this up, so, I'll get out of everyone's hair. But I'll still take the opportunity to...

Great story, as always! I should really get around to writing a Xenoblade story sometime. The first game is my favorite game of all time, after all.
I am so glad somebody else started this series at X. I started there too, and I absolutely love that game. And yes, it needs more love, both from fans and from Nintendo and Monolith Soft. Hopefully a port and/or sequel in the future...? We can only hope...please, I would give as much money as I can to see that come true. The radio of lore and easter eggs from Future Redeemed gives me hope, but I don't want to get them too high, lest I be disappointed again...
Regardless, once again, fantastic story. While Nia is far from my favorite character from the franchise, it's hard to deny her Welsh sass is great pred material, and this story really makes that aspect shine more than anything I've seen on this site. Here's to more stories from you, Xenoblade, Raildex, or otherwise!

Tangentially, I probably have a solid...15 hours in Elma Redux alone... Really stuck true to X's absurd boss difficulty, even on every lowest setting, with characters in the 90s...at least I eventually won.
But yes, like, I have had literal dreams on SEVERAL occasions just of X2 being announced. Not even playing it, just, seeing it revealed. Future Redeemed's radio straight up had me screaming, but then watching Luxin's like, hour long video that ultimately said "tldr Xenosaga is more canon than X, don't get your hopes up" just...mneh. Like I get that, yeah, but...I want to believe SOMETHING could happen eventually. Besides the Zelda ports, it's like, THE one exclusive the Wii U still has left.
Anywho, thank you! Nia is one of my personal favorites...heck some friends even call me Nia as a result, so I just, knew I had to do her justice. Seen far too many things with her on the receiving end for my liking. I wanted to do something with Mòrag initially, as she's THE favorite, but...what can I say, Welsh cat fun...
I definitely wanna do more with Xenoblade, whether it's in Alrest or Aionios...it's just a matter of "will my Railgun brainrot let me diverge for a substantial period of time?", I guess. I hope so...

Or, perchance, maybe in Bionis and Mira as well...? Nah, just kidding. Write whatever the hell you want to write. That's what makes stories fun to read. I'll get around to writing something for 1 or X someday, so just write whatever you want, on your own time. Your stories are fantastic quality, so keep going at it!

I'll be honest, I've had...some fleeting ideas with 1, but they just haven't hooked me like anything I've thought for 2 or 3. There's Fiora, Melia, Sharla, maybe Tyrea for me to work with, but...I don't know what I could do with them. As for X, I honestly got nothin'. Besides the obligatory Lin finally eats Tatsu.

All’s well that ends well… if you ignore the future where torna finds out, Jin and Malos rip Mor Ardain apart like wet tissue and we all die when Malos blows the world up… or Amalthus does Amalthus things… or the core crystal gets stolen by Praxis and Theory. But what are the odds of that?
Jokes about the inevitable deaths of everyone aside, this was some good work. As a question though, what did happen to Rex? Like, I know what Nia thinks would happen with him, but would he really just leave? And did he really survive? Or did the crystal use regenerate?
Please feel free to ignore my questions. And you kindly for sharing.

Shucks, thank you! I really worked hard to get this feeling right. It's honestly pretty stressful working with material that I know so well for the first time. I just, know how things should be in my head, and if they don't line up correctly, I'll never let myself hear the end of it...
As for Rex, I kinda just thought that, well he definitely wouldn't just...leave, especially after losing Pyra. In reality, he probably would have to be held custody for a couple hours at the least, try to get him to calm down while Mòrag explains the situation.
I do think he did ultimately survive. Probably gets let out at some point the next day after Nia leaves, only to want to go right back in for a second attempt at saving her - and now Pyra too. But without being the Aegis's Driver anymore, ehhhh. Probably wouldn't work out for him.
As for Pyra's ultimate fate, yeah...she's definitely not just gonna sit in a vault for all of eternity. Now, Mòrag's plan is noble on paper, but...she's 100% not aware that the real threat to Alrest isn't JUST one Aegis. So, yeah Torna'd likely just, attack at some point, or someone else would try and steal it. Or both! Heck at one point I thought about having Nia just keep the Core Crysral for herself for kicks.
Regardless, Mòrag's kinda screwed things... Oops.

Yah,it's finally here! ^_^ I remember you talking about this story in PMs so I'm glad you got it finished. This was a fun read and it's nice seeing Brighid getting some vore action too for once. Loved reading Nia's dialogue as well. And nice to see another fan of X; that was my first game too and hopefully it gets ported soon

THE X FANS, WE EXIST! But thank you so much. It's such a relief to finally be done with this after so long... The whole Brighid bit was initially added when I felt a bit...dissatisfied with what I had up till that point - just felt like I needed more. But at the end of the day, I'm glad I did it! Helps flesh things out a bit, and served as a chance to use more characters I otherwise wouldn't have gotten a chance to.

Been absent so I didn't see it when it went up, but looking forward to reading it later!
