I mean when it comes to general storytelling, and you can use Princess Jasmine from Aladdin as a basic example, emphatically rejecting an unwanted relationship 'society' is pushing you towards and embracing some form of freedom is usually inherently likable.
...It usually isn't so selfishly cruel a rejection, or happens to the 'nice' romantic option for that matter, in general storytelling but, hey, that's the nature of the fetish. And we love it for it.
