A dwarf's abnormal methods of bolstering his dragonman buddy have made him a frequently-victorious brawler! Rook is an orc who seeks to end the victory streak.

I like this setting and have several more ideas for it, but we'll see how that pans out - I've been horrible at sticking to settings.

Garz - 11 years ago

Probably not the kind of diplomacy you learn about in most diplomatic schools. :P

You got them both - Gevin was the goblin, Rakkad the gnome. I do have this problem with occasional frequency - I like in media res starts, and don't like having characters turn to the camera or narrator and explain who's who. This time, though, I think it was a mistake to have Gevin's /name/ thrown around before Rakkad's, when the camera was generally on the latter... hrm.

Oh well! Something to work on. ^_^ Glad you liked the story - sorry it took me so long to get to responding.

Sydney - 11 years ago

That's some of the weirdest diplomacy I've ever heard of. Makes a lot of sense for two really warlike races though! It was a fun read. I do love your Orcs and Legarto.

It was a bit hard keeping some of the characters straight in this one though. Gevin was the goblin and I think Rakkad was the gnome? It got a bit jumbled for me since the characters were introduced so fast and without much description. Not to nitpick, of course. I really liked the story!

Man, I have a lot of your stories to catch up on now. I need to check this site more.

Garz - 11 years ago

Hm, then maybe those points were less clear than I was hoping. Sorry!

Part of his disdain comes from the general gap in overall might between the two. After all, the dragon was in no way threatened, not even a little, by the actions of the humans nor orcs.

Part then comes from age differences - he lives unreasonably longer than mortals, which makes it kinda hard to take them very seriously. Kinda like it's weird to imagine a mayfly, who only lives for 3 days, having as rich of a life experience as we humans do. ^_^

Then part of it was how quickly it occurred- the moment he gave anyone but Viction attention, they were removed from what meager fighting strength they had immediately. He was quite impressed by Viction, despite the fact that Viction did indeed succumb as well.

...but then part of it is a sort of double standard. Maybe he's not as different as he thinks he is? He was pretty surprised that he actually felt something from Viction, let alone orgasm...

Either way! Half the point of writing is that everyone interprets things differently, and there is no wrong way to interpret things. ^_^ So! You make a good point, heh.

Heh, that is a drawback of starting in media res - unless I have someone sit and describe a character/environment it tends to not get done. Sometimes it'd hurt the pacing to stop and describe, sometimes it helps.

I kind of waffle between them - in this case, not having someone from outside the situation means it didn't happen. Oh well, though - hopefully the story was enjoyable nonetheless. ^_^

TheBlueEnigma - 10 years ago

Hey Garz, sorry to nag but I think you need to be a little more descriptive of the characters at present. You said Kekaa had abs but you didn't say if they were bulging or round considering he hadn't digested the minotaur yet. Plus I think you leave a little to much to the imagination so characters from past stories end up getting reused. Sorry if this sounds annoying! ^^;

Garz - 11 years ago

Haha, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Believe it or not, I actually really like the little guys. ^_^ I'm fond of underdogs... I'm just not kind to them.

In Maui's case, it is indeed 'second language' issues. These different tribes speak different enough languages that there's a more common 'orcish' between them. It's more of a case-by-case basis whether or not an orc can get the knack of switching around pronouns and sentence structure, or whether or not the orc cares. Of course, more insular tribes tend to have more of a problem, while more trade-friendly tribes tend to have it less.

Languages are hard.

(Now, in some cases the problem [or a second problem] comes from tusks. Speaking common around your tusks is difficult and hurts, and it hurts somewhat less if you tweak your words for it. Ideally they'd avoid certain diphthongs... but when playing orcs in D&D and being verbal, I found that too difficult to do consistently in casual speech as I'd keep forgetting. Habit has thus become that 'hasn't gotten the knack of speaking around their tusks' results in grammar issues... which isn't quite as logical, but hey. :P)

Thanks for the comment!

Sydney - 11 years ago

I really liked the little twist in this one. It proves that the Tier actually do have uses beyond food! I think this might be my favorite from you yet.

Do certain clans have more of a penchant for learning the common language than others or is it pretty much on an individual basis? I'm guessing that Maui's speech is broken because it's his second language. Do they normally just speak their own tribal tongues?

(I also get the feeling that I may need to organize what is quickly becoming a cluttered Ziibi folder, heh)

Garz - 11 years ago

I... /didn't/ respond?! O_o Ack, sorry! I'd swear I did.

I have been toying with vore rules. My main flaw is that... well, okay. I think I have a balanced subsystem idea, but there's great incentive to just use something reflavored from regular D&D rather than making up something entirely new. It's the old 'do I really want to add complexity?' problem, heh. Regardless, _a_ goal is that if a legarto and a minotaur put the same stat into strength (so if they both put in an 18, resulting in the minotaur getting a 20), the legarto has a significant advantage in the vore arena of at least 10-20%, but I'm playing with numbers. Strength and size, however, will generally be positive things - but I don't want it to be entirely 'bigger is better', as being bigger is already a ton better in D&D for physicals... and presumably not /everyone/ will want to play a small race to purely hop down someone's throat...

Also, thank you for the compliment! That's exactly what I'm hoping for - hoping people get a good peek into their mindset.

As for why they keep losing wars... well, that's actually something the Legarto themselves would really like to figure out. From an external point of view, Legarto do have an array of troubles.

One is that they're not really unified. The empire is 'the empire', which spans their continent. Legarto are a group of somewhat associated city-states that don't necessarily agree with each other - they even used to fight it out with each other. Now to be fair, they all agree on 'we don't like the empire', but Burroni doesn't want to jump out and attack until there's what they consider a sufficiently effective plan as they're first on the retaliation block, D'arco isn't too keen on the strategies other city-states utilize, you get several city-states going, "Well I want to be in charge of this, not you", and it's a mess. It's nothing like the minotaur, mind you - they get along infinitely better than that, especially nowadays - but it's nothing on the empire's wholeness.

Two, related to one, is that they're sorely outnumbered. They would be outnumbered even if they were all unified, and since they're not they're really outnumbered.

Three, they are then out tactic'd. Legarto have more of the barbarian-style 'You be awesome', while the empire has more of the 'carefully planned army'. At the moment at least, the well trained army is beating the group of potent individuals.

Then in addition to this, a sizeable chunk of the empire are noncombatants. While this is partially a source of pride for the Legarto (All of our units can eat people, your have potters), it's a double edged sword: The empire has a lot of people dedicated to making the subordinate stuff that makes an army run. They have people more than willing to be food runners, lots more people who are willing to work on weapons or armour, and generally the empire is better built to have a war. Legarto who focus on noncombat areas are made fun of, but they are in fact swamped with work to do at all times.

Looking at gear in general then, the Legarto have less of it - less supplies in general to help them in a wartime setting, especially if they lose a battle (And thus lose the resources spent on it). Now, this can be solved with trade... but uh, the empire is a wonderful friendly trading partner, the legarto is a dangerous worrisome trading partner.

Then... well, being constantly on the winning side is pretty good for morale for the empire, and being constantly on the losing side kinda... kinda sucks for the poor Legarto.

Finally, culture is a powerful thing. The Legarto have last names now (city-state names), D'arco has a standing army, their childhood is a lot different, and all in all they're getting more and more imperial. A lot of things are basically converting to imperial standards in an attempt to beat the imperials, which might pretty much end with the Legarto losing purely on a cultural angle.

And those are some of their problems. Also granted, uh, these are problems an external eye is seeing - you'll probably get some arguments from within the Legarto about which of these are actually problems. I mean, armies have won wars in the face of many of these problems, and Legarto are freaking dangerous ^_^

(As a completely unrelated aside, culturally, about half of the races are 'losing' [Ayar, Minotaur, and Tarmacs to name a few], while half are 'winning' [The Empire, Geuzen, and Ruach to name a few]. I find that more overall interesting than the more typical 'everyone's culture is strong in its own way'. ^_^ )

Anyway! Reproduction is something I'm analyzing a bit more - mostly in 'how much detail do I really want to get into'. This is further the case as everyone in Ziibi is joining the Legarto in being all-male!

It takes two to make a child, however. I'm waffling on how focal I want pregnancy in general - among other things, if it's not strictly /mentioned/, then I'm totally cool with PCs who want to focusing thereon, while PCs who do not want to never having it come up.

My intent was that Legarto genitalia is external, but that's another thing on that list. Leaving it up in the air means players can utilize whichever they prefer, and it can easily be handwaved as 'eh, some humans have red hair'. There is a point where voracious humanoid alligators no longer have to follow all the rules without it breaking verisimilitude, heh. ^_^

(As an aside, for my initial games, I'm totally going to allow - and in fact will request - people make up stuff for the setting. Thus, you're plenty encouraged to be a Legarto from a completely different city-state and make up rules thereon so long as they don't contradict existent ones. This may take a little back-and-forth, but they're likely to just end up canon (Although I'll probably end up taking the idea and running off with it, as an extra heads up). So please - make up a city-state of your own that has taken to metallurgy, or give Mendoza a brother, or make /that/ city-state that nobody trusts since it's known to have cooperated with the empire at some point in the past, or something.)

Sorry again for the really long gap before the response, whoa.

Sydney - 12 years ago

I think I need to play a Legarto now. I was on the fence before, but they just sound really awesome. I see that you approve of my dread necromancer idea as well! Still torn between that and doing some kind of mixed melee/caster guy since I get the impression that str might be an important stat for vore rules. Have you thought more on those, by the way?

Stuff like this is what I wish Paizo included in the Advanced Race Guide. You've done a better job in making me feel like I understand your race than they ever have. All of those little details really add up into a comprehensive picture of what Legarto are.

That said, I do have a couple of questions. If the Legarto are so naturally powerful and have such a strong focus on military training, how is it that they've never won a war? Has the Empire always just drastically outnumbered them?

If they're all male, how does reproduction work? Is it magical in nature or do they all have some kind of womb that connects to their lower intestine? While we're on anatomy, is their genitalia internal or external? I'm guessing external since you mentioned that they're warm blooded, but I just wanted to clarify.

The D&D mechanics behind the races of Ziibi. I'm still working on a few areas, and will definitely be adding more flavor text and similar.

I'll also be consolidating this information with the other racial list... eventually.

I'm definitely going to run a few D&D games with this setting, and am gearing up for that. There's a lot of information to be had first, though, so it'll be a bit as the setting is crafted - there'll definitely be warning before we get...

Oh, it's not a bother at all. ^_^ Other people's opinions are important - it helps to get views on things that aren't just mine, and it's good in general to know what people are interested in or curious about.

It'll certainly be play by post, though - my schedule does not allow for a chat system.

Sydney - 12 years ago

Man, I just hope I'm not complaining too much about those few things. Especially since the overwhelming majority of stuff you've posted for it seems awesome.

I'm sure it'll be frustrating combining some of the classes and feats from both games. I wish you luck in making it all work out smoothly though!

By the way, how are you planning on running this? Play by post or in some kind of chat program?

Garz - 12 years ago

Haha, I forgot completely about animate dead. :P The only minion-mastery my local group does is via constructs. That's a good catch - that's one spell that should indeed remain limited.

I was using the pathfinder list myself, though - I'm cool with most of the listed spells becoming free. I'd really /like/ holy water to get used more often anyway, and the really potent effects still have a cost with them, so meh. I did note that the divine version of True Seeing is no longer 'M or DF', which is odd to me, but meh again.

I do think Blessing of the Six Gods is going to become more limited. ^_^

And haha, I've never really looked at Dread Necromancer myself, but I haven't heard complaints about them. I'll be sure to give them a detailed look - you're right though, there's a wealth of fun options to be had in 3.5.

Although hybridizing the two means I have to stare at feats that were changed between, like power attack. Oh well, that's for later analysis!

Sydney - 12 years ago

In regards to the divine attunement, I'm only familiar with Pathfinder spells and the material costs. If you're using the Pathfinder rules, the cost would usually be completely negated by it. The one that came to mind immediately was animate dead which is 75gp per HD of undead. Having an army for free is a scary prospect. I don't know if it's the same in 3.5 though so I guess I'm a bit out of line there.

With Blessing of the Six Gods, I see what you mean about each thing being minor but taken all together and with the other really good racial bonuses (not saying that the other bonuses are broken. They certainly are not. Just really good)it just seems like too much to me. Especially since you didn't even want them to be one of the best races.

I'm also soooooo glad that you're anti-powergaming. Stuff like that just sucks the fun right out of a game for me. Also glad to see that you're willing to look at classes/prestige classes individually because it is hard to make a blanket statement about either. Right now I'm thinking about a Legarto dread necromancer (they live in the swamp and are always around decay, so it seemed to fit), Orc scarred witch, or a warlock of some kind. Really not sure yet and of course I'd need to see if you're alright with those classes and that archetype first anyway. I've also got to make sure that I play something that works well with whatever vore system you put in place. I just got excited when I heard that there would be 3.5 stuff since it has SO MANY options that Pathfinder lacks.

And nah, your response wasn't too long. But if you want to talk more, I'd be glad to trade messenger info with ya.

Garz - 12 years ago

Haha, thank you for the helpful response! Lemme break this up as I respond entirely too verbosely...

From playing both 3.5 and Pathfinder, I've noted that the most powerful classes in both tend to be the same regardless of which classes you use - heck, most of them are more powerful in pathfinder. Thus insofar as base classes are concerned, the sky's the limit, I believe - people will be able to use classes from both 3.5 and pathfinder, and I'll blend the ones that are in both (For example, I dislike the limitations put on the bard's song in pathfinder, but there are then aspects I like about the pathfinder bard).

Prestige classes are then a slightly different animal. Generally speaking, they run the full gambit from whomigosh to completely worthless and everything in between in both systems. :P So they'll end up approved/disapproved on a case-by-case basis - just about everything will be done on more case-by-case. (And I'm very open to helping make neat ideas work out for people)

Now, all that spiel said and done... I've seen 3.5 barbarians and martial adepts be tweaked into doing nonsensical amount of damage per round, and I've seen pathfinder wizards and sorcerors solve encounters with crazy metamagic shenanigans, and I don't like it in either case. ^_^ So there will definitely be a gentleman's agreement in place - this really won't be a game to test out your optimization skills. Especially since there'll probably be new people about. I'm much more on the 'having fun with a neat character idea' end of the bandwagon. (So to you optimizers out there, now's a good time to aim for a lower threshhold!) I'd much rather everyone be 'rather weak' than too strong.

*Notices he's totally drifted away from the comments*

I do like races having minor but flavorful differences. I'm looking forward to the party being handed a note, and the minotaur snorting with a, "Something's fishy about that." ^_^

Then, Blessing of the Six Gods. On the /one/ hand, while it does a lot, pretty much everything is exceptionally minor for the action required. The resistances cease to be much of an aid almost immediately as you level, the healing is nonexistant if you're in combat where it's most useful (And I'm not too worried about out of combat healing), and the main perk will thus become the boost to caster level... and then it doesn't last too long. So you're spending a turn in combat being fairly ineffective for a minor boost.

On the /other/ hand, Blessing of the Six Gods was one of the seven things I wrote down that made me kinda hesitate about it, so the fact that someone else called it out means it definitely should get another good look in the balance department. :P The original version of it had them pick one of the six and it then lasted all day, so maybe it'll return to that version with a feat option to improve it. Lemme mull over that one for a bit, as a second opinion agreeing that it needs looking at means it probably does.

Then insofar as divine attunement goes, well... the primary intent is 'Raise dead and similar are 4500gp instead of 5000gp'. But then I went and analyzed the divine spell list, and the vast majority of those are totally not big dealsto worry about. Bless Water, Augury, Consecrate, Glyph of Warding, Continual flame, and Divination are not terribly more useful free in practice, and most of the ones like Hallow still have a cost associated with them and thus are not concerns. So in practice, that's really not a big deal - the only spell I'm a little leery about is lesser planar ally in specific, but that has its own complications.

I think you're right about Vitruvius' and Revitalize. It was originally intended for a potent out of combat healing ability - out of combat healing is going to be pretty easy in Ziibi, as that puts less pressure on fighter-types to do their jobs - but then switched into being in-combat and got kinda muddled overall. That will be getting a nerf next time I'm looking at the mechanics.

Thanks again for the comment - I'm glad to hear the interst in the game! It'll be a bit before games are ready, though, as there's a chunk more information to put forward (Including basic rule informations!)

...I hope that wasn't too lengthy of a response!

This story is rather fiercely based on a true story. I mean... everything (except the vore) literally happened to me last week Thursday and Friday. The dialogue, in fact, is word for word to the best of my memory.

So of course, just had to give it a moment for my fantasies to step in, and here we go.

Heh, I'm glad you're pleased by the Legarto! Legarto are always hungry.

But hrm, that's a good point that should be made - I'll be sure it's more clear in their more encyclopaedic entry that each race will eventually get.

Still, to answer your question! Their numbers aren't high, but the main flaw is that they're up against a foe that they can't beat... so when you're on the losing end of a war, it makes life harder.

I'll try to make that more clear, though. Thanks for the comment!

Sydney - 12 years ago

Are the Legarto numbers relatively low? You made a point of mentioning how rough it would be to lose a soldier in this one and how more are needed in the other Legarto story which makes me wonder.

Regardless, rapey gatorguys earn my seal of approval. Especially when they're also hungry.

It was kinda fun to write things from not-third-person, heh.

That's a pretty cool concept! Now I'm wary about coming across one of these guys in your campaign though.

First person is a fun change of pace and can add a lot to a story when done well. It let's you really get to know the main character a lot better which is nice because I happened to like this guy.

My first full tour story!

Written for the guy who is probably the biggest reason I'm into vore today. ^_^

I'm actually a bit worried about it - I tried to do some looking into for FT, and I'm presuming I focused on all the wrong areas, on the wrong person during the vore, yadda. Full Tour fans, please comment so I can make it better next time. :P

Garz - 12 years ago

^_^ Ah, I see. Thanks for the point about focus - I'm still a little worried that I didn't aim the full tour itself properly, but the comments I'm getting seem generally positive about it, so I think it's okay.

Also thanks in general! Descriptions are one thing I'm really bad at, I note - I usually have a solid idea what they look like in my head, but since I tend to jump right into the meat of the plot, I tend to miss out on that. I'll keep that in mind for the future!

Garz - 12 years ago

Thank you for the compliment! I finally got around to following your suggestion, heh. :P

Sydney - 12 years ago

I don't think you can focus on the wrong person, really. It can be fine either way.

Anyway, it's a fun story. I liked how laid back Kelzen was about the whole thing. Really, the only suggestion that I'd make is to be a little more descriptive about the characters' appearances. You don't really say much about that aside from them being orcs.

Haha, thanks! I'll be sure to move Legarto up then - go a little more into detail about the gatormen of the swamps. They're the ones with the losing record historically, but obviously everyone can't win all the time. :P

It's good to hear the races people are most interested in, though. Especially as I'm working on racial feats/features amidst other things.

I will be sure to fix that typo - annoyingly, it's also present in my notes, which is probably why I didn't notice it. Thanks for the catch!

Insofar as your other questions, I have always been exceptionally fond of the various subsystems in D&D - but very few settings actually embrace them and integrate them wholesomely despite their being exceptionally well balanced and very fun options. Thus! I am integrating them as focal.

But that's a good point - I should put a nice in-universe explanation about how the three of them work, even though some of them will be a bit rough to actually play without the relevant books. Oh well, in relatively short order:

Binding and Shadowcasting are from the 'Tome of Magic', while Soulmelds and Incarnum are from the 'Magic of Incarnum'.

Binders connect their essence to those of vestiges; spirits beyond comprehension and understanding. In binding them each morning, they obtain unusual abilities. Mechanically, they have a subset of abilities based on the spirits they have bound - most of which they can use at will, or every five rounds but with no other limitation. They tend to fulfill the 'secondary attacker' role.

Shadowcasters pull on the shadows behind the world to cause potent supernatural effects. They are the most 'wizardy' of the statements - many of their mysteries are similar to spells. They have a connection to the plane of shadow, and are skilled at concealment and hiding.

Incarnum users utilize the life of everything about them, using the power of life itself to create soulmelds. Soulmelds form physical objects on the incarnate's body, which allow for potent effects. Incarnates can then move around 'essentia', thus determening what soulmelds are most potent. They get a lot of decisions to make each round.

The three incarnum classes are incarnates, who have the most potency from their incarnum, totemists, who venerate magical beasts and get a bunch of natural attacks, and soulborn, who are more like paladins - they use full BAB to attack things with some soulmelding on the 'side'.

...that came out waaay longer than I was thinking it would. Bah, I'm too verbose. :P They're all really fun and I highly suggest people try them out! And I will be able to help with explanations for binding and shadowcasting at least!

Sydney - 12 years ago

Man, now I want to play a game in this setting even more. I already liked your Orcs, but these Legarto seem really appealing too.

As for questions: what are binding, soulmelding, and shadowcasting? How are they different from magic?

Oh, and there's a typo on the Temerário section. The second to last sentence just says "They tend to."

Question to viewers: Izzis too much of a block of text? Normally there's more whitespace between paragraphs.

Also, is there any blatant information I'm not mentioning? Feel free to post a comment about anything I've forgotten to explain.

Garz - 12 years ago

I definitely wouldn't mind doing so - some of the most fun I've had in D&D was in a vore game on this site, in fact!

The catch is that my free time is exceptionally sporadic, which eventually killed my ability to play in said game. So we'll have to see if things open up a bit.

Still, I'm making these with the hope that I'll be able to utilize them at some point. ^_^

No, it's not too text-blocky. Have you considered running a game using this setting online? I'm sure you'd find no shortage of people willing to play on this site.
