I don't always make new characters. But when I do, they're really creepy and have too many pointy teeth. >__>;
Meet Tartarus, the albino centipede dude. Though in seriousness, you should probably hope that you never meet him; thankfully, you'd have to be pretty damn far underground for that to happen in the first place. For those of you who like exploring caves, however... you'd do well to make sure that your flashlight has lots of spare batteries. Tartarus only sees things in 'light' and 'dark', with the former of the two causing him quite a great deal of pain, so he tends to keep his distance from any bright light sources-- but you can rest assured that he'll be waiting nonetheless, lurking in the background until the instant it becomes dark again. And then, well. You die. :>
I'm still in the midst of developing his personality, but I absolutely had to go ahead and draw him. He'll be getting a profile on the chatroom just like all my other characters, once I actually take the time to sit down and write it. I've actually liked the idea of a centipede guy for some time, though only now got around to making one thanks to some encouragement from a friend. I seriously tend to pick the weirdest and most unnerving species to base characters off of, though... ;;

Oh wow. The form of his body is divine; you really captured the weight and realism of the centipede part of him perfectly. Also minor details, but the striping on his arms and the way the centipede segments rise up high on his waist rather than low down? Fantastic. I think he's amazing * 3*

Oh gosh thank you thank you!! @@; You're one to make some really fantastic characters yourself, so it feels like a huge compliment for you to be praising my design so highly. I tried looking at actual images of centipedes in order to properly pull off his lower half, so perhaps that made a difference? Regardless, I'm thrilled that you love him so much. ;;

Pfffththtbt, you think outside the box with all of your art, it's impressive and amazing and I love perusing your gallery. You should be proud of everything you do, regardless of whether or not I love it (which I do. please don't ever stop your gallery is perfectkajl;sdfdl;as) I really really hope to see a little more of him soon; he's so amazing *0*

fhjfgkhlfgfg @__@; aaaaa stop you're too nice, I can't handle all this adoration
I don't know if I'm proud of absolutely everything I've ever done, but I do try to post the things that I believe turned out the best. And as much of an enormous pain in the ass Tartarus is, I really do want to draw some more of him... I am pretty pleased with how he turne out, myself. ;;

Well every artist has stuff they're secretly not proud of. But it's all beautiful and I love it and yay so there >:U Seriously looking forward to more of him though. Those cute stripey armssss <3

He looks pretty playful.
Is he the type to play with his food?
About how many people would he have to eat for a full meal?
Can he talk?
What does he usually eat? (Excluding people)
How does he like to spend his time?
Posted by Cerulesta 11 years ago Report
I haven't completely designed his personality yet, so I can't actually answer your questions 100%-- but I'll say what I know for sure! He can be playful sometimes, in a rather cruel way; he likes to make it known to his prey that they don't belong in his domain, and will often harass and stalk them while out of sight, especially if there's a light present that's preventing him from striking. He doesn't much like having to wait even though circumstances often demand it, so he bides his time by being a jerk and trying to unnerve and scare his potential victims until they lose it. On that note, if it wasn't already obvious... yes, he can talk. xD
He's 48 feet long, so he could definitely eat a handful of people (probably 3 or 4), but it's really unlikely that he'd run into a lot of people at once in his native environment. As a result, even catching one human would make him pretty happy. When there aren't any people around, basically anything smaller than he is will suffice; sometimes he likely needs to go close to the surface to catch things, or even go out of his usual cave when it's nighttime. As for his hobbies... I haven't decided on those yet, sorry! Once I write his profile, he'll be more fleshed out. :>

Oh jesus, and the more I learn, the more I love <3<3<3

Does he listen to smooth jazz?
What's his favorite color?
80's sitcom?
LOL Sorry, couldn't resist. Readasaur opened up Pandora's Box.
But seriously, I'm awed how you created the sense of WEIGHT with him. Very interesting predator.

His favorite music is the sound of screaming, his favorite color is darkness, and his eyesight is too shitty for him to watch TV. :|
... Okay that's a bunch of crap BUT HEY.
Thank you, at any rate! I'm pleased that you find him intriguing <3

I guess you could say he's a...
*sunglasses*
Human Centipede.
(YEAAAHHHHHH!!!!!)
I can meme, too! Seriously though, another amazing character~ But uh, don't take it personally when I say I really hope I don't meet him in the chatooms... ^^;
Posted by Cerulesta 11 years ago Report
... pffffffff
I should have known somebody would make that joke at some point, but it still managed to make me laugh out loud. >>;; And no, I'm not offended at all; even if he's not a character that you'd personally want to be eaten by, I'm really pleased to know that you like him despite that. Just don't go spelunking and you should be safe. <3
Posted by Rathe 11 years ago Report
There's no way you couldn't have at least passingly thought of that lame pun while drawing this. I simply refuse to believe it.
And I was half-joking about the chatroom thing. If he finds me, I'm bug chow. It was more of a veiled compliment regarding your ability to make insanely creepy and scary preds.
Oh, and since no one else has praised this particular detail, I love the fact that he's an albino. At first, I thought it made him look kind of like a sketch, or unfinished, but it adds to his creepy factor in a neat way. I guess I shouldn't say it looks like a sketch, that sounds like an insult - it's more of a pale, ghostly look... err, I'm bad at compliments, so I'll shut up, but great work!
Posted by Cerulesta 11 years ago Report
I did think of it in passing, yes. It just still amused me when you said it, even though it had already vaguely come to mind. xD
And thank you! I thoroughly enjoy making characters that are, in my opinion, both disturbing/scary and attractive; almost all of my predators are based around my idea of those two traits intermixed to various degrees. Tartarus is definitely one of the 'creepier' ones, quite intentionally, and I don't usually expect anyone other than myself to find a character like him to be all that physically desirable (hey, I'm weird, I admit it)... but when people do admit to finding him creepy, it tells me I've accomplished my goal.
I actually took his albinism from the idea that a lot of insects and creatures that live in perpetual darkness have no body coloration and are more or less pure white. There are some actual centipedes in real life with that trait-- so it's not entirely an abnormality as much as it is attributable to where and how he lives. Not to mention what you said, that it makes him look ghostly; he stands out in the darkness, which could enhance the frightening factor for someone who unwittingly happened upon him due to the stark contrast between his pale form and the surrounding darkness.
Argh, I'm getting carried away babbling about this, my apologies! But seriously, thank you for your compliments... I feel like I must have done a good job on his design when I hear things like this.

After giving some more thought to whatever it was I was trying to say before (admittedly something I should do before commenting), the words I think I was looking for are 'shaded' and 'greyscale'. It's not that noticeable on a dark brown background, but stick this guy in a bright colorful setting (AKA anyplace he doesn't belong) and well, it's obvious from the way he looks that he just wouldn't belong there. And that's really clever character design, right thar.
And the way his shell looks reflective, despite it being white, is a nice touch.

Naturally, I post my update to your response right after you post yours x.x I'm great at timing like that.
But can centipedes really be albino? My old house used to be infested with them, and they were always black or maybe dark, dark brown. Which just makes the white colors creepier, personally.
And I enjoy listening to your 'babble' I think it's highly interesting <3 That said, you've probably got things you want to do other than chat with random people about your art, but I appreciate the insightful conversation, nonetheless!
Posted by Cerulesta 11 years ago Report
Well, Wikipedia says so, anyway-- that cave-dwelling species sometimes lack pigment. I don't think that would apply to the kinds of centipedes most people would run into in their houses, though. You'd probably never see one unless you were in, well, the sort of environment Tartarus lives in. I guess you can't always trust Wikipedia, but since a lot of subterranean species are white, it seems to add up from what I can tell.
And yes, I can see what you mean about him standing out in a typical aboveground environment... he'd be very uncomfortable there, too, and not just because he'd stand out. The abundance of open space and sunlight would probably drive him insane, not to mention put him through agony, the poor bastard. (Though given that he's a giant, terrifying, man-eating half-centipede man, maybe he'd kind of deserve it.) I could probably talk about random miscellaneous facts regarding my characters all day... I don't think I should, but I wouldn't put it past myself. I don't make new characters terribly often because I like to devise as many in-depth facets and features of them as I can, which naturally takes forever and ever.
Posted by Rathe 11 years ago Report
I certainly don't mind reading your responses and getting to know your characters and inspirations better ^^
But I'd bet you'd rather show off your characters in stories and such, as opposed to comments that most people don't read.
Oh, and once you've got that profile up, I'd love a link. I enjoy asking questions about other people's characters, and even if you don't have time to respond, some of them might maybe possibly help you think of things you hadn't thought of. Food for thought, if you will.

I haven't really written anything yet, but it'll be updated in the next few days, most likely. If you want to check back at some point. :>
And maybe I should write a story or something... I should get around to doing more than that. Though I don't really care where I get to talk about my characters; I just like talking about them, even if only one person is listening. <3
Posted by Rathe 11 years ago Report
I'll make sure to check back periodically~
And if that's the case, you and I are going to get along well, methinks. Already, I can imagine a friendly battle of sorts, with us seeing who lasts longer in conversation. Unfortunately, that's a battle I'm going to have to forfeit for tonight, as I need to sleep (as difficult as that may be with Tartarus on the brain...) But I'll definitely be back with more questions later! Oh yes, I'll strike when you least expect it ;3

The way he "pinches" at the waist looks kind of awkward to me.
Having said that, please excuse me while I flee in terror and try to figure out how to sleep with the lights on before nightfall.
Posted by Cerulesta 11 years ago Report
Can you tell me how exactly it looks awkward? If there's something that looks wrong, I want to fix it, but I don't quite understand precisely what you're talking about. ;;
... Though I am pleased to have terrified another viewer, regardless of any errors. EHEHEHE...

It's mainly the sudden change of widths from the centipede half to the human half, creating that sort of triangular shape during the transition. The only way I know how to put it is, if you look at the average naga picture, the naga is about as wide around in their snake half as they are at the waist. It maintains continuity with our expectations about the human shape; for normal people, we expect the legs to be about as far apart as the waist, so for anything that has animal parts where the legs ought to be, it looks more natural for the animal parts to be about as wide as the legs, which is about as wide as the waist.
Posted by Cerulesta 11 years ago Report
Okay, I see what you mean, thank you! I'll look into making a slight change there; I don't think I can fix it perfectly, since that would require totally redoing either his human or his centipede half in order for them to be the same width (and that would take forever), but I'll try making the transition more gradual. :>

Nice artwork Tartarus looks freaking amazing and I would love to see more artworks and stories with him in them but can you tell me how he eats his prey and what he does with his prey after eating it ?
Posted by Cerulesta 11 years ago Report
Thank you very much! There probably will be more stuff involving him at some point in the future-- I don't know when, but it is quite likely.
In terms of how he eats people... well, I'm not sure exactly how much detail you want me to go into? More often than not, he would swallow human-sized creatures in one piece; the humanoid part of his body is larger than an ordinary human's would be by comparison (in other words, he's slightly 'macro' in size, though not exactly 'giant'), meaning that it isn't a terribly difficult feat for him to accomplish. If they try to fight back too much, well... let's just say that he might rough them up a little. Or a lot. Tartarus doesn't tend to be the kind or merciful sort. >__>; Anything he eats will inevitably end up being digested and used to sustain him, considering that he doesn't take prisoners (though none of my predators do, really-- it's just my preference).
I hope that answers your questions to some extent? :>

This is quite the interesting character.
Posted by Cerulesta 11 years ago Report
Thank you. I like to try and make characters that are a bit out of the ordinary, so to speak... sometimes perhaps a little too out of the ordinary. But I guess that's more or less what I like best. <3

hot.
Posted by Cerulesta 9 years ago Report
You even think Tartar Sauce is hot? :'D Most people are really unnerved by him. ... I'm both unnerved and attracted, though, and your tastes seem to line up with mine in a lot of ways, so I'm not really that surprised that you like him too. @v@; It actually is nice to hear-- I want him to creep people out, of course, but it's nice to hear that I'm not the ONLY person who thinks the horrible centipede monster-guy is kinda hot. :|
Posted by pudgepire 9 years ago Report
I love bug-people-thingus like this. Especially with big long bug bodies like this. (I'm trash for -tauric/quadrupedal things.)
I mean, he does look creepy, but it's creepy-hot-as-heck. uvu
