Maybe his spirit is hauntingly watching May? Ghosts can obsess about Fetishes as well, what's to say that Brendan is in love with May due to making the fetish a reality and is stalking her. (Who knows what goes through the walrus' head, I thought that was the shadow of the mom there. It does take time to get back to the spot and she said she was coming back.)
