Now to make this clear, as this is a controversial topic.
I made this image by painting and mate-painting over an artificially generated image.

To clarify
Im not a fan of AI "art". (Definitely not as a final result.) It takes out all the fun of whatever "process" there is left.
Not even talking about the total annihilation of originality, lack of creative thinking in your brain,
and the mountainous amounts of beautiful but meaningless images swamping the web.
However, if used as a tool to get an "idea" (not the final image)
and then transform it to your own image, style, and story by completely painting over it with various techniques can be fun.
Im not saying Im going to use this method a lot, but Im sure I'll get inspired by some of those images out there and do
paint over them from time to time
It's actually very similar to the photo-bashing / mate-painting I have been doing here and there.

Yeah like a lot of things, I think AI generation is a tool, and tools can be used well or they can be used poorly. Like you say, a common practice is to kitbash images together to conceptualize and visualize an idea, and in many ways that is literally what AI art generation is. So it makes sense to use it in that way as an early part of the process. And this is a great example of basing a piece off of one of those generated images, while still transforming it and making various changes and additions to make something original.

AI generated artwork is a tool after all, when utilized properly it can enhance an artist's work. I don't think anyone would be angry at an artist for using something like photoshop to assist them. I'm hopeful that in time the controversy over its misuse will wane as while its limitations become clearer and people can start using it more freely.

I say well done, you took something and used your artist prowess to turn it into a piece to call your own, many individuals haven't done so yet so to see you doing so at least helps us understand the technology just a bit more. People may disagree and are entitled to their opinions, but at this moment, this turned out great. Also that priestess be looking gorgeous.

Whenever I see these I just assume somebody used the AI themselves.
Though I read through the description and somehow never saw that part, guess I'm going blind!

Well, if you use AI art as a tool to, for example, generate the pose of the character you are going to draw, their expressions, or the situation where they are going to find themselves, I think it is good.
The bad thing here is the consumers, those who want quick and cheap results, without wanting to wait that long. Just as they ask that artists should not have negative reactions to AI art, they should not belittle the artist's work either.
There's an analogy that I liked hearing recently, where I said that artist art is like home-cooked food, and AI art is fast food.

I agree with you.
And for my process and why I pick what i pick. First and foremost I use it as inspiration. I look for good lighting (which most of them have) colors and shapes. If I can nip a thing or two from the actual art (mostly background and face structure) Ill do that too.

Oddly enough, I prefer the opposite approach as a theoretical way for AI to provide some value.
i.e. Use photobashing and sketches to create a base composition and then use AI to overpaint it to give the final product a consistent look.
In my case, I think that the beautiful but meaningless and samey AI images are because it just keeps repeating whatever is most common. Using the most common pose, perspective, and composition, you could maybe get 5 or 10 images by changing the character. But if you keep changing the pose and composition, you could get millions of valuable and unique images with the same art style.
BigBig has like 1000 images in his gallery here, most in his own style, and there are comic pages to compensate for the ones that aren't. But I think he's still got a long way to go before running out of new things to do.

Yeah, the problem with AI art is that it's essentially a composite of other -usually stolen- art, but using it as a "seed" for making something new isn't really different from referencing a photograph or someone else's art unless enough makes it into the final product that it could be considered the same as tracing.

As long as it's transformative enough, I don't see the problem using it, just like with photo bashing and mate painting. But yeah, I completely agree.
