“You know…” Newton’s ears perked slightly as they always did, instincts on alert every time the voice of the immense cats echoed around him “if you, do decide to stay for more games, you might need to stop being such a miseryguts”

I have enjoyed concocting the mechanics of their game... heh, in some ways I've felt I have to... since they're all kinda nerds, so.. rambling on about the game and it's rules is just in character.
Billy was an interesting character, I thought about his design for a while. Especially as I intend he be a, significant and memorable character in Newton's tale

You know, I think "desensitized" is a pretty good word for John's casual nature around the cats. It's like how I can stand on the curb at the bus stop as cars go by at 40mph just a couple feet away from me.
Enjoyed the mechanics explanation this chapter! Though I guess we'll get to find out if Newton has made a fatal mistake, or just a mistake..
Also, the image of a lion with reading glasses makes me smile for some reason.
The Hungering Shadow
Gone from twilight, the night truly upon the world, a lone figure hurried his pace on the earthen path that wove between the villages of the island. The determination to not spend another night on the ground, enflamed by the distant glow of light kept the traveller moving. Chill beginning to creep under his cloak as it re-emerged from the spreading shadows where it had hidden throughout the day.

That was a fantastic read I’ve always loved the way you write about dragons. You always manage to capture how indifferent they can be to those they consider prey. It was really nice to see how the agreement played out between the vixen and him. Looking forward to seeing more of Merinith in future writings and I’ll have to look through your archives to learn more of them.

Newton’s Adventure
The night had been peaceful, Newton had to admit. Of course, a lot of that he could easily attribute to the stress of the day. As he stepped out of the small room he’d had for a nest, out to the village of mice, memories of being hung beneath the rolling car, running for his life, being dipped in burning sauce… all of that at least briefly fled his mind. His first, bleary, aimless steps into

It's a bad deal, over all, but it's also probably the best deal that Newton could probably get in this world; especially given that he has the choice to leave whenever he wants. Jason's still a jerk, though.

Feel like there should be a cat in a dragon costume coming up in this series.
Newton of Muringard
Riding on a paw, was infinitely disconcerting. The very idea of being on a cat’s paw made every instinct in Newton’s body shiver. Used to a world that was solid under his paws… the, fleshy squish of the surface, and the bob of the whole feline’s body moving, the throb of a heartbeat he could feel… it was all so, different. He was certain he’d never get used to it…

It does make perfect sense in light of "magic" mostly representing physical feline intervention of some sort, I was just being pedantic.
DrakeZephyr - 4 years ago
Mmm, I think in their system the ward is more a durational block, than an attack absorbtion... perhaps part of having to restructure most of the magic system to a religion based thing... Perhaps I should have called the spell bulwark or something...
Kasra - 4 years ago
I feel like you've put a lot of effort into this system, from the in-game mechanics to the out-of-game justifications, and I love it. For Newton, it's just a shame that he encountered Bartholomew's collection first, turned him so heavily against the religion mechanic in even this lighter form. I do look forward to seeing how his first game plays out!
That said I dunno about that ruling on using Shielding Ward to cross a pit, seems a poor interpretation of blocking an attack. But I suppose you shouldn't argue with the DM..
DrakeZephyr - 4 years ago
Ah, but the mice are more than playing pieces... lose the mouse, tear up the character sheet. Or perhaps see it as, lose the character, console yourself with the mouse...
Littledude - 4 years ago

Newton the Warrior
It wasn’t how Newton had ever imagined his death. The bright sky outside, dominating his view, with the world, buildings, fields, like pebbles and moss far below. And there, looming to block it all out, the fat cheetah who had been served his near helpless self. His jaw was locked shut by some sort of hardened sugar; his arms held tight by twine. Devoid of any tool or trick he had ever possessed. Newton

Sleeping rough was, as the name implied, unpleasant. Newton stirred with an ache in his arm where he had been laying on it, and the ream of fabric he’d fetched from his bag to act as a bed of sorts felt damp under him.

Some may well. The idea I tend to go with is, that in these communities of relatively short-lived mice, there is a certain acceptance that comes with familiarity, and jokes help things go by.
Bud - 4 years ago
Nice work! I find it really interesting that the mice in this universe kind of accept that they'll (almost definitely) be eaten by a cat eventually.
It makes me think that's something teenage mice would speculate about with their friends in a joking, morbid sort of way. Like, "I hope I get eaten by a really hot cat boy/girl at least. Maybe a sexy cheetah. Jeremy is such a killjoy - he'll probably get eaten by a fat, grumpy old lion."
DrakeZephyr - 4 years ago

It is a common scenario, but imo a good story with good characters can really make an old plot enjoyable. All art is some variation of imitation from multiple sources but unique interpretation, it’s just how people create. From personal experience I would suggest thinking less about coming up with original settings and plots and more about exploring the settings and plots you enjoy reading because those will be stories you really want to finish and share to hopefully get other people to do the same.
That, in my opinion, is how you actually end up inventing completely new settings. Because by that point you’ll have absorbed so much information and stories that you can put it all together into a sort of composite world that’s really just all your more common and consumed stories out together like a big jigsaw puzzle.
I’m on Discord btw

A constant thrum echoed around Newton as his dextrous paws pushed at his bulging backpack, patting down the lumps to better arrange the contents, only to add more, crammed into the opening. A squeaked grunt with his exertions, yet he finally tugged the flap down and sealed it with the buckles. Big Fat Warning! This is a bit of a distance from what I normally write. I mean... maybe back in my earliest days when I was exploring all over... So expect graphic detail, exploration of multiple...

If I'm being honest the tags on this chapter don't quite do it justice, though I'm not sure what I'd add.
In any case this is a setting with a lot of potential and I'm glad you took the time to write out the second chapter. Fingers crossed you continue!
DrakeZephyr - 5 years ago
It's really nice to hear ^^ It kinda got... no interest at the start, you know? I really liked the idea. It was inspired by the game Soma, and the idea of… your sense of self, of awareness, your personal continuity. And I got thinking about this setting. Kinda a commentary on the nature of the fetish community in a way, and I liked the bitter irony that despite living his fantasies, his... continuing self was again doomed to live vicariously, because to survive was to not live the fantasy
Kasra - 5 years ago
Came back to this after reading chapter two. This does a great job setting things up! The name makes a lot of sense, now, and the ending of the second chapter has a bit more impact now that I know how things started and that things had gone wrong.
It's a very interesting idea! Explicit reformation scenarios like this aren't something I think I've seen around before. Kinda gives me an Edge of Tomorrow vibe. Sorry I missed it before, but here's hoping for chapter three eventually.
StormBlown Chapter 6
Cayas closed his eyes, lifting his head to let the wind play along his jaw and the sensitive markings that would glow so in the dark. It was a nice breeze for flying. He could feel his wings shivering with his deep longing to take to the sky again. But he knew better. Still, his wing didn’t hurt.
He opened an eye a crack to eye the arc of his wing. The scales l

“The City of Scalin” Rick mused to himself, wandering with his partner into the main square of the large settlement. It was a place he’d barely heard of, and certainly never visited. But work did allow him reason to travel, when the job was lucrative enough.
Scalin seemed a prosperous city, sure enough. The roads were finely carved stonework. Not exactly uniform, in fact, in some places it seemed almost patterned. All was the same, off-white stone. The

Here is a little something I threw together. But of a whim... I have some traces of plans for a sequel or more... but undecided if I'll shelve it indefinitely... got plenty else I ought to be finishing writing. On which note, The next stormblown should be the next thing... I wish I could say it's nearly done, but it's got... a big chunk taken out of it.

So, I'm a little later than I wanted to be... anyway. So, replacing The Den of Dari'Karra, something new. Going to do a couple stories of a few new storylines, see how they fare, see how I like them, then pick one for a new series. Everyone's, input will count of course.

Cayas dragged his paws into the gloom of his cavern, light flickering from the fire that still burned. Sparing it a look, he grudgingly noted to himself that he’d have to drag in more wood for it. One idea I like to see more often that counts as a survivable scenario and maybe even fits this storyline.
Is dragon eats human, realized he actually cares/invested into the human when he feels the struggling stop and get sad that his human toy is gone for good, realises there is a line between unconscious and dead and throws him up. A very confused, lightly digested and scared human wakes up wondering why he is still alive, the answer is the whims of a dragon who was not yet bored/still attached dragon who changed his mind mid digestion. There may be a element “ I said I would eat the human so I will but never said I would kill him”
It would not be pretty, best case being suffocation is what knocked the human out but the human might recover given time.

The sleek green dragon lifted his muzzle from the deep, reflecting pool in the back of his cavern, shooting he human grooming the scales of his sat thigh with a hearty rumble “I am indeed, it’s my favourite day of the month”
“Ah, already?” the human d

I'd pretend the Dari story was second, not first this month out of some intention to shake things up... but, blatently didn't have it ready in time. But here is your monthly dose of Dari. With this series in particular, I welcome ideas, long term it would be nice if it became more, community focussed, so don't hold back

One wild field trip
“I thought you’d be more excited, Blue”
The sorority girl turned her bored eyes from the flicking scenery outside their bus to shoot her, current boyfriend a look. He just shrugged and resumed chatting with his friends across the aisle. Blue sighed, bored, and looked back outside. The trip his fraternity and her sorority were taking had sounded exciting, at first. Ta

So... this was a commissioned piece from a couple months ago. I sent the final version to the commissioner during a time of, life happenings, so I kinda forgot to post it publicly after they were content with it... so here it is. Surprise.
Unlike my previous commission pieces, this one was entirely detached from any of my previous work, which was interesting. I hope it came out alright for everyone. It is, largely a rampage, lots of devouring and squishing of folk going on, so,...

Rheal goes to school
“Letter for you Johan”
With considerable effort the archaeologist pulled his head from the writings he was translating, turning his focus to the door to his office. Well, office was a slightly grandeous term, like calling himself an archaeologist, although… since he’d met the strange dragon Rheal, that term felt more fitting. Office however, had not. The room

Normally these days I try to post a new den of dari'karra at the first of the month, a little bit of a familiar pattern... but, it's not done yet. So have some Rheal for now. Everyone likes Rheal, and he likes you... admittedly normally for lunch. Rheal visits the seat of all human knowledge. A little thank you to the hilarious history of very real scientific beliefs for the inspiration on this one...
My patrons get to see all my work a week ahead of anyone, so if you like my...

It is interesting to muse on where exactly he fits into the mental framework of a dragon. Maybe almost like a landmark, or a part of Rheal himself

Very nice! Though the question of "loyalty" brings up some questions of its own...if dragons view other dragons primarily as rivals, and humans as food, where does Johan now fall in the equation? It may well be as simple as what Johan said earlier on, that Rheal has mentally categorized him as a form of useful pet. If THAT's a concept dragons have..
I do enjoy this series.

its good... HOWEVER I would like to read more on the swallowing of the rude people
Ralin stirred the stew on his pot with a certain intensity. It took all his effort to think about the food. Certainly, he was concerned with it burning, the hearty stew was a relative luxury, but that wasn’t the main reason. He was trying not to think about Grackle.
Since the day he had escaped the dragon by throwing an itching powder he’d ground together from the irritating feathery barbs of a particular seed pod over its muzzle, Grackle had been pursuing hi

So apologies for another slightly late post. Was in travel at the posting time, got lost in the muddle. But here it is, the second commission of last month, for one of my lovely patrons!
As requested, a sequel to the Grackle story. Here was a tale I never expected to write. I hope you all enjoy it, and to those who found the previous story... dark for their tastes, this one is... a lot lighter.
If you want to see my work sooner, or just want to help keep a dragon fed, I'm...

Once again you have chummed my waters, hooked my thoughts and fed my imagination. As long as you keep on providing food for my soul, This fish will always be led into a frenzy, keep up the good work.
With weary hands the village’s doctor placed a new candle into place, a flicker of light from the previous, dying candle flaring it into life, illuminating the inside of his meagre house.
“I’m not the right man for this, Frederick” he muttered, shooting the, half comatose carpenter a forlorn look “I’m getting old, and truth be told I was never smart enough to learn this profession well…” he lifted a dried cloth from Freder

The long, long, exceptionally longly waited finale to the tale of the fate of that little coastal settlement. I won't spoil it, if you've been following this story, you won't want it spoiled, and if you haven't been... you should probably read from the beginning.
A big thanks to the commissioner on my Patreon https://www.patreon.com/user?u=9679574 who pushed me to finish this series, I hope it satisfies you all

Azorm made a good choice! Though an unexpected one. I really enjoyed the concept of an essentially drugged internal juices addicting a populace of potential prey, or friends as the case may be.
