Abandoned villages and towns were not uncommon in that age, really. Razed to the ground by a raiding party, an invading army or perhaps even a dragon, lost to sickness or plague or forever tainted by some greater, deeper evil. They stood silent and harmless, disturbed only by adventurers passing through their ghostly streets or scavengers seeking to repurpose the last of their resources.
