I've been thinking about it actually! The problem is figuring out how much I would charge. Making 5 seconds of one animation could take as long as 2 seconds to make, just depending on what is is, so I'm having a hard time figuring out what I would do to sort of average out.

I feel like Zwanzik is on the right track with this. Wouldn't it make more sense to charge an hourly rate for effort put into animation commissions than for seconds that the animation itself ends up coming to?

I know someone who exclusively does animation commissions and what he'll do is invite a client into a private (or public at the client's behest) livestream and put in some hours of work (so the client can see that the hours they're paying for are being used purely for their commission so that they're not feeling cheated). Charges can be after each "session" or upon completion of the commission, depending upon your feelings on the matter (or perhaps it can be discussed in advance with the client and negotiated on a case-by-case basis. Personally, I wouldn't trust the "charge at completion" unless the client in question was a trusted regular).

This ALSO has the benefit of the client being able to give you real-time input on the project, but the DOWNSIDE is that if the client insists on being present to witness you working on their commission (or you insist on them being present for accountability), then scheduling times in which you're motivated to work on their commission and they're available to supervise might be tricky. That said, if you get tricky clients that like to change their mind a lot, then they get charged extra for costing you more time with edits, which is another benefit.

Just a suggestion you might consider if you decide to start taking on animation commissions, since it's a fairly elegant solution to your dilemma.

That sounds like a really good suggestion! Thank you! I know part of my problem is that, all of my experience so far is with just still images, so I'm able to look at a request and know exactly how much time it'll take. I don't have the experience with animation, so I guess it's just hard to stop thinking in those terms of "This will take this much time"

Well, as the content creator, it's entirely up to you whether or not to open up the floodgate into a new medium (as I'm sure you've already experienced, animation is a whole new beast that only resembles the one you know), but I'm glad you're at least taking it, and my comment, under consideration.

Also, while I have your attention, I would like to add that this animation is amazing and I love it <3
