The hard stone of the basement walls
and floor pressed into Dawn's back. She focused on the feeling,
trying to shut out the sensation of emptiness, the hunger that gnawed
at her from the inside. It was… a special kind of torture.

By the time she came to, Stella was
only really certain of one thing: the classroom floor had gotten a
lot softer than she remembered it being. Her eyes fluttered open
halfway. No, this wasn't the classroom floor. It was her own bed.
Solid black sheets and a pillowcase patterned with interlocking stars
of different colors. She'd woken up in her own bed.
She sat up. Had it been a dream? No…

The car rumbled
quietly as it idled in front of the school, giving Stella a good view
of the school grounds past the gates. Most of her classmates were
already there, walking across the grass and chattering to each other,
or playing games. The heavy clouds overhead dimmed the sky, hiding
the sun. It was likely to rain today, and pretty hard at that.
