Standing tall, jeans and t-shirt slightly damp with sweat, the grey feline femme set down the hoe at the interruption and turned. "Yes, Jack?" she answered sweetly. Her outward demeanor was calm, but inwardly she felt a trace awkward. She'd been working in the garden most of the afternoon, and was a little bit sore and quite a bit hungry. And while the innocent well cared for bunny looked delicious, she didn't like feeling that way around Jack. She really needed a proper meal.

"There's um. . . a mouse. . . at the front door."

"A mouse?" The feline's eyes widened as did her smile, her tail going still, her fangs gleaming against her grey fur in the afternoon sun. While she tried, she couldn't entirely hide her excitement at this news.

Crouching gracefully down, she reached forward to rub the bunny's ears. "Jack, dear," she cooed, "why don't you go upstairs for a while? The sun should be nice and warm about now in my room. I'll go and look after our guest."

With that she rose as gracefully as she'd descended, walking swiftly yet silently back to the house, claws absent-mindedly unsheathed.

If you want to critique the STORY, that's totally fine. A STORY should stand on its merit. All of those are very fair statements, and while I may personally disagree with one or two of them, I'll accept them as constructive critique and roll that into my consideration for the future.

But if you come in telling me that it's pointless to write in the vampire genre because you don't appreciate it (clearly your contention that it cannot be sexy or mysterious falls flat with me, and thus is not a universal truth), then I think it's a very fair response to just reply that you should just avoid things clearly tagged vampire and choose from the incredible glut of other fiction freely available.

Very cleverly done, and quietly touching. Somehow the setting feels natural; the internal consistency of this strange new society is well rendered. It's eerie, and ghastly in a way, behind the whole facade of civilised bargaining (although to the fey it's no facade), yet Tim's preparedness, his acceptance and his intelligent capacity to get what's most important out of the "deal", his behaviour in "playing the game" according to the fey's rules but to his own advantage (so to speak), bring a certain calm to it all. Which is very suitable, as he surrenders and contemplates the safety of his son's future.

After some time to ruminate on this story, I realized what it is that I like about this story so much. The fae (speaking generally) have a similarity to dragons in that they've largely been stripped of their negative connotations in recent history. With "Eragon" and "The Dragonriders of Pern", and hell, even "Pokemon", what used to be a nemesis is now a bosom companion. Likewise, elves have somehow become just pointy-haired humans with a potentially well-deserved superiority complex, depending the setting. Both of these seem to be a result of "protagonizing" the creatures, increasingly flanderizing them toward their positive traits. But what got lost in that process was the fact that dragons and elves both have traditionally served as foils to humans-- villains, whose narrative role is *to be defeated*. Dragons (in the Western tradition, leaving aside the water-gods of Japanese lore and other Asian flavors) exist to present a challenge for the hero to overcome. A dragon is big, powerful, breathes flames, and has all the gold in the world, but you can bet that by the end of the story a human will be walking away with more gold than he started, smirking. Likewise, the fae are guided by a series of incomprehensible rules, set against which a human's best hope is to break even. So it is with the Fae here: Timothy is ultimately helpless to prevent his own death. And yet, by the end of the story, we get a sense that Tim actually won. And moreover, he achieves an archetypally human victory: faced with the inevitability of death, he manages to produce a more secure future for his children. This story speaks to one of those fundamental human longings, and for that reason it feels like it's more than a story, it's *literature*. That's what makes this such an awesome read. Once again: well done.

Especially between creatures that aren't likely prey-pred partners (an alligator and a stork might be more likely to be friends than an alligator and an impala), but there are plenty of Fox/Hound, Sharks/Jets kind of moments. Lots of room for interpersonal drama when someone's family member gets all indignant about them hanging out with food when they're always so hungry, and takes advantage of the prey proximity. ;) This is a high turnover environment, though, and there's an expectation that you will lose friends and family members in their youth (if not your own life). Personally, people are not unlikely to hold grudges or form vendettas if their friends are killed/eaten, but this is considered a creature's private drama, and it's not typically enough to generate any kind of tribal/village warfare unless there's overpredation or some kind of insult involved. There's a certain degree of fatalism inherent in the world.

It's the closest thing to organized resistance there is, except it's not organized; it's opportunistic. There's a well-defended wall across the narrow part of Scotland and on the English Bluffs, but nothing so useful in Ireland (again, not for lack of trying, but teaching rodents to organize at a national level isn't THAT much easier than teaching anyone else). Ireland is good eating for those who are willing to brave the sea. Think of it sort of like Viking invasions.

The Grassland Collective has no interest in a war with the Capital Cities - they live entirely in their shadow as a wealth extraction device. They send food (especially protein) to the Capital Cities, who get to have cheeseburgers and pepperoni and even steaks without the cultural guilt of active, wide-scale predation, and in return their standard of living is much higher than in the unincorporated tribes and villages and enclaves elsewhere in the world. The Capital Cities pride themselves on being morally exalted over the rest of the world, but it's more pride than morality; they'd never really risk unsettling the food supply to prevent slavery in their neighbor... as long as no Capital Citizens are being forceably enslaved.

Ahh... makes sense! With Jacob, my trick was just an exaggeration of what I normally do anyway when I write Miranda's characters - write them like tarot cards or horoscopes. Include details that seem to point strongly at a personality, without actually spelling it out, so they can be read a number of ways. That was a good lesson for me to learn, even though I've been told it a thousand times - if you show an evocative outline of a shadow, readers will frequently fill in the rest themselves with better than I could write.

Male preds are difficult for me, so I really appreciate the compliment. :)

Not Jacob precisely, just a male lead that's dominating without turning into Snidely Whiplash. Currant Lennart comes to mind if you're familiar with the Kate Daniels series. worth a google if you like supernatural romance novels.

Very well written characters. It's not easy to portray someone like Jacob, I've read a few professionally published authors that botched the attempt. Keep writing, Swords, whatever flavor you choose.

There's an indie game called "Eversion" out there that you should play if you've got the time. It has about the same arc as this does, and evoked in me the same feelings: starting out with a relatively mundane premise, it quickly veers into the unexpected, culminating in an ending that turns everything you assumed upside-down. And then, if you work at it, it continues on to turn both itself and you completely inside-out.

That's how this story makes me feel. I have this nerve-rattling sensation that the vast unknown of the cosmos is not the unexplored frontier waiting to have its secrets uncovered, but the home to horrors we can only guess at-- made all the more incomprehensible by how intimately they may relate to us.

What an interesting concept. Salivating flowers? Very nicely drawn. I especially like the designs in the top right corner and bottom left corner, as well as the gradients leading to them.

Very nice. My own "demon" will probably get a big chunk of my soul for this, but that story was - at the risk of sounding like a hyperactive nine-year old - awesome. It's a great twist on the classic "angel and devil on shoulders idea". You've got a really good writing style too, and managed to bring Ken to life very well. Instaneous favourite.

Anyway, who needs sanity? It just gets in the way.
